Hi! My name is Chris and I am currently a 4th year medical student at the University of Witwatersrand. I need some help with my tuition...
Why be a doctor?
Since I was a child I have always admired doctors. The grace, elegance, smiles, and willingness to sacrifice their lives for the sake of others. I read a quote that said: “...a stethoscope is an expensive piece of jewelry, for it costs you your youth...”. I don’t recall where the quote was from but it got stuck in my mind. Mother Theresa, Gandhi, Chris Barnard and countless other heroes gained fame after their last breath. They never received or experienced the consequences of their selfless actions. They were not fueled by recognition, money, or Nobel prizes but something else.
Throughout my life I experienced this nagging feeling inside my soul that something was missing. I tried to void this feeling with road trips across Africa, adventures in the Amazon, empty relationships, and even food. People around me would say that I am a free spirit, a global citizen, determined, fearless. I did not feel this way. I was searching for something. My soul was never at rest.
It makes sense now.
Doctors are fueled by purpose, destiny, an intrinsic value of helping other people live life to the fullest. They are lifelong students on a quest for a better life for all. Where passion and purpose meet you will find meaning. This is where the empty void in our inner beings will be filled. The nagging, empty, restless feeling inside will disappear when you see a fellow human being walk away free into a life worth living. This is why we study medicine.
My soul is at rest.
I have found purpose...
