Empowerment!
I'm back at it again! It's been 6 years since I visited Africa and this time I'm volunteering in Ghana!
I was honored to find out that I was accepted into Photographers Without Borders to work in Akatsi, Ghana this fall for CareNet Ghana.
I am thrilled to serve this organization by providing photography and video media! CareNet is a nonprofit based in 3 major regions of Ghana that was founded in 1996. They strive to empower communities by improving the quality of life for the vulnerable. As a volunteer, I will shoot for 2 weeks this fall, to provide them with photos and videos for their cause: helping under-represented women and children.
You may remember my trip to Zambia in 2009. I shot my thesis documentary "Learning to Fly" about the inspirational life of one of my students, Sylvia. Since then she has done amazingly well and just completed her first year of a full scholarship to Arizona State. We've kept in touch, spent the Christmas holiday together and here's an awesome message that she left on my timeline:
"Rehema The Great!!! for some reason I can never seem to find the right words to describe or communicate to you how significant, selfless, awesome, gracious, knowledgeable, uplifting and adorable your life is to me... You have guided me when i went wrong, taught me and introduced me to cool stuff technology-wise, mentored me to be a leader and problem-solver, empowered me to be a dreamer and achiever, introduced me to your wonderful family and both amazing and already established people. Honestly to me, you are more than a friend i just met years ago... i celebrate you and wish you a fruitful and prosperous long life..."
You never know where life will lead and with what special people you may cross paths with! You collaborate and do your best and hopefully amazing results are achieved. I'm hoping that you will support my latest efforts to collaborate with the vulnerable women and children of Akatsi, Ghana.
I'm sure that you've seen some of my recent photography, but if you haven't click here.
This project has no funding, it's 100% voluntary, except for what you provide to cover the flight, visa, program fees, insurance, vaccinations, etc. I already reached my goal on the other site but still have some project expenses to raise money for. I want to get small gifts for the kids, back-up power battery, transportation, to and from the airport, etc. However, donating on this page will go straight to me and not through the program so it will not be eligible for a tax write-off.
Thank you for your continued support and love!!
