Regal Academy in Ghana was in need of a water well to service the school and its children.  Thanks to the generosity of backers to this campaign, and lots of off-line donations, we've got the well drilled!

Getting the well drilled has provided a jump start to the school renovation.  But the well is only the beginning.  There is much to be done.  Bathrooms have been constructed, and some of the classrooms have been repainted, but lack of funds has hampered the continuing renovation.  Without an infusion of funds, the school will no longer be able to provide opportunities beyond grade 6.  Many of the students are hungry and unable to bring food from home.  We can provide meals for these children for less than $1 per meal, but simply don't have the funds available to do that and pay teacher's salaries.

Below is a history of the school and the challenges it faces today:

The late Ellen Damson instituted the school in 1989, and name it Glory Preparatory school.  Unfortunately, when Ms. Damson passed away 10 years ago, the new adminstrators allowed the school to gradually lose it focus and fall into disrepair.

The school was recently sold to its new owners; Pastor James Amoako, founder of Word Power Christian Outreach Ministry in Ghana and Head Pastor of Restoration Worship Center in Suhum and Mr Osei Kwame, an associate in ministry who now manages the school.

The school now is now operating with a new name -  REGAL ACADEMY, and has the mission to "TAKE LEARNING FROM ZERO TO ZENITH"The new management has the sole aim to improve the academic performance of the pupil in order to make the school first class in the Suhum locality.

To improve the school, management has recruited new teachers to teach, train and instill discipline, solid work ethics, and a Christian focus.  In addition, plans are underway to improve the infrastructure in order to provide a favorable environment for learning.

The current enrollment is about 120 students, far fewer than should be attending school in this region.  The current owners vision is to restore the school to is past glory by improving the facility and raising the academic bar, and help the students achieve greatness.

Challenges
The following challenges face the new administration:
   1)  Raising student morale
   2)  Improving academic performance

To meet these challenges, the school facility must be renovated, creating an environment conducive to learning, and instilling pride in the students.  Additionally, new teachers and staff must be recruited and trained.

Immediate Needs:

1) Drill a well to provide clean drinking water and basic sanitation needs DONE!

2) New rest room facilities for the use of students and staff DONE!

3) Renovation of class rooms, including paint, new desks and chairs

4) Teaching aids and supplies for every class

5) Institute a meal program for the children (URGENT NEED!)

6) Add a security fence

7) Computers for IT classes (we can only dream of this right now)

Long Term Plans:

Long term plans call for the school to have 12, two-story classroom blocks to accomodate many more students, with a projected enrollement of 400 or more.   The educational needs in Ghana are great, and the goal of Regal Academy is to help meet these needs by offering a first class learning environment, where children are encouraged to excel and continue beyond the basic primary education.

Benefits:

Okorase and Suhum township will benefit immensely from this project as it will allow increase in enrollment.  Academic performance will also improve and increase the number of pupils attending Senior High School.  Improvements in the school will help bring the school drop out level down, and should help to inspire prior students to return to school.

FOR USA Donors - Please note that gogetfunding does not provide a tax deductible receipt.  All money raised through this campaign will be routed to the project through King Christian Center in King, NC.  If you need a receipt from a tax-deductible organization, please contact us, and we will make arrangements to get it to you.

  • Thank you to all the donors so far! We've got a long way to go, but there are lots of other plans to raise funds outside of this crowdfunding campaign. As more money is raised, we'll post the amounts here in the "raised offline" section, so you can watch as we approach the goal. Thanks again for your support!

Preparing for the well

Update posted by Paul Barnhart at 08:05 am

Thanks to the generous donations, both here and off-line, we have raised enough money to drill the well and install a storage tank! New bathrooms have been constructed, as well as a septic tank, so the water and sanitary facilities are now in place. This doesn't mean we are finished,. . . . .

  • Most of the time, I go about my day filled with the convenience of modern appliances, electronics, and facilities without giving a thought to the difficulties people in other countries are facing. Thanks for making me think about it, Paul.

  • This is such a great cause. We so take water for granted here in America. It's time to think of others rather than ourselves. Bless these children with the ability to be able to have water to drink, wash their hands and have the facilities that we don't think twice about here. Lets drill a well in Ghana for the school!
