Campaign Story
Evidence in Tanzania shows that high absenteeism, lack of concentration
in class and early dropouts are the results of short term hunger. About
50% to 70% of students go to school without breakfast and they do not
get any meal during school hours. The outcome of short-term hunger in
the long run are the following major nutritional problems namely
stunting, low body weight and micro nutrients malnutrition including
deficiencies of who consumes inadequate amount of food necessary to meet
the body’s energy and nutrients requirement have diminished cognitive
abilities, reduce school performance, retardation, reduced physical
activities, impaired resistance to infections and increased morbidity
and mortality rate and hence adverse effects on productivity incomes and
national development (Food and Nutrition centre 2006).
This
challenge is noted in the Babati district in Manyara region as one of
the issues for primary and secondary children involving / seeking for
education at schools, there are some reasons which lead to increased
problems including those which emanate from the society such as low food
production poverty, no vegetable production, environment, attitude
toward vegetables food intake at schools and others.
Tanzania low
level of production about (3.3%), for Tanzania if this volume might
increase at least three times to (10%) of “diets”, this might build up
the value addition of vegetable to enable community development lead
reducing poverty the campaign will sensitize the community to use
vegetable on diet and commercial bases .
Project will to
contribute to the support nutrition increase to the students in primary
and secondary school children on school feeding program and marketing
long-term growing vegetable. Its mission is: “producing marketing
vegetables, healthier children for better community”. The medium-term
development plan is to enhance the ability of youth farmers in Babati to
increase and sustain agricultural production for increase children
nutrition, improved household food security and income generation while
at the same time safeguarding the environment by adopting sustainable
agricultural practices. The specific objectives includes the following
o
To assist youth and women farmers to engage Vegetable growing to
improve nutritional status, food security and marketing - free supply
approach to school feed program.
o To promote awareness among local
communities of the values and importance of consumption vegetable for
different purposes including dieting vegetable for health conciseness.
o
To enhance capacity of vegetable grower and farming households to
apply appropriate vegetable sustainable farming practices through
awareness and training workshops, information dissemination and
extension services.
o To mobilize small scale vegetable growers to
Farmers’ groups and a Community Association to manage and sustain the
activities initiated under the project and take advantage of the
economies of scale in purchase of farm inputs; processing,
transportation and marketing of agricultural produce and facilitate
better access to credit from financial services.
