As I am sure you all know on 5th Aug 2018 the Island of Lombok in Indonesia was hit by a series of earthquakes, most of the villages in Northern Lombok were destroyed. 563 people killed, over 1,000 injured and more than 417,000 displaced.

When Travelling Lombok in 2013 I became friends with a local, Dedy. In 2015 I visited Lombok again with a group of 10 friends. On this trip Dedy's uncle and father picked us up from the airport and his friends took us to the Gilli Islands on their boat, we paid them the same as the tour company would have charged for the trip, which went to his family. After, I was invited to meet his family in their beautiful village in the shadow of Mount Rinjani. I was warmly welcomed, fed and have fond memories of the kindness I was shown.

Dedy has asked me for help. All 35 members of his family are living under tarpaulins, including his grandparents, many children and his 1 year old son, Davie. This is 4 months after the disaster. They want to rebuild their house but need money to buy materials. Employment has not been available since the disaster as the local economy collapsed.

I have been speaking to a friend who was in Lombok over the past few months to help, she says the situation is dire and that people are desperate. There are not many NGO's around and the government help is far off, bear in mind Sulawesi suffered a bigger disaster recently and is taking alot of aid. My contact said that they don't need people to help them rebuild, they can do that themselves, they need money to buy materials.

Every single penny raised by this campaign will go straight to Dedy and his family and will be used to rebuild their home. No middle agencies, straight to where its needed. I will keep you all updated on their progress.

Anyone who has travelled though Indonesia knows how warm, welcoming and genuine the people are. Not to mention how beautiful the country is, now its time to give back for those memories and experiences.

Its the festive, a time for giving, instead of buying tat that will be discarded and add to the waste we are growing over the planet. Lets help this family out. The inequality in wealth of the world is unfair, Dedy and his family have every right to a home as we do. Please share and give whatever you can.

If any of you would buy me a festive pint should we meet, can you give it to these guys instead.

Merry Christmas xx

  • Good effort Katy. Some other friends have been there helping to clear up and 're build. What a tragic thing to happen, it should remind us all how fortunate we are everyday for the simple things we take for granted.
