Rebecca’s Story

"I Can. I Will. End Of Story."

Staying Strong and Positive are our only options. Please can you spare some time to read Rebecca’s story.

Hi all, my name is Cat, I am Rebecca's mother. We are from Cape Town, South Africa.

Right now, Rebecca, who is 33 years old has been diagnosed with cancer of the pancreas and liver. She has moved from Durban to Cape Town to be with me so I can take care of and monitor her. We are awaiting a biopsy to find out the kind of cancer, the stage and how aggressive it is. We received the Covid-19 test results late yesterday afternoon after more than 48 hours and she is Covid-19 free . She is scheduled to go in for the biopsy and another CT scan tomorrow, Friday 7 May 2020. This will be her third CT Scan to date.

Some History behind Rebecca's Journey:

She has had to stop working and give up all other forms of activity - the cold reality is that she does not have an income at all, other than her fiancé, Eugene, who is keeping their home together, and myself, a single mother to assist her. She is on a hospital plan with a limited amount of funding, however due to the COVID-19 virus, most of her procedures are being done out of hospital and the plan does not cover these outpatient procedure costs.

This has been a long journey which started in August last year where she was admitted to hospital with severe abdominal pain. After many blood tests, and a CT scan of the abdomen she was diagnosed with idiopathic pancreatitis and cysts on her ovaries and was hospitalised for 2 weeks, put on a food bag and developed thrombosis in her left arm. She was discharged with no tangible reason for the cause of her pancreatitis and no treatment plan. Her pain started getting worse and she had lost an incredible amount of weight. (August 60kg - March 43kg) In March this year she was admitted to hospital again, with severe abdominal pain. A Gastroscopy, colonoscopy, CT Scan of the Abdomen and pelvis and many more blood tests later she was then diagnosed with Chronic Pancreatitis, a pseudo cyst in her pancreas and a blood clot in the main vein between her liver and spleen, and was then treated for this, again with no results, and mounting to further severe pain and illness, medication that has only made her weaker and develop pain and symptoms a parent does not want to see their child go through. The doctors in Durban have been unsuccessful in sourcing the cause of her pain/diagnosis/prognosis and there was NO pain management treatment. Her Fiancé drove her down to Cape Town in the midst of the Covid-19 lockdown. We were unable to get permits for this as permits were only issued to cross provinces for a funeral at the stage. So we got a letter from the referral doctor and receiving doctor and they took on the 18 hour drive in her condition and made it to Cape Town.

Since her arrival in Cape Town she has seen a third doctor who ran more blood tests, a stool test and an MRI (MRCP) Scan, and has now been diagnosed with a tumour in her pancreas that has grown substantially since her initial scan in March 2020 and has now also spread to her liver resulting in a further 25 Growths. She has seen an oncologist last Monday, 4 May, who can only advise a way forward once biopsy is done and we know the type and stage of cancer.

Prior to this she was also misdiagnosed and treated with another dreaded disease which was a big blow and very hard to deal with and extremely traumatic, only to find out that they had misdiagnosed her and medicated her incorrectly for quite some time

We have a pain management team who will come to our home today to assist to manage the pain and also counsel us through this.

Unfortunately all this comes at a price.

Without a doubt, we as a family find ourselves in a very difficult situation, yes like many other families.

We have decided to set up a fundraising campaign to raise money to assist with the ongoing procedures, doctors, and especially pain management and just to make her life a bit easier at this very difficult time. Cash flow is a huge problem at the moment, and I do not want her to suffer due to lack of funds.

Any donation will be gladly accepted, no amount is too small. Every R5/R10 donated will go a long way in the long list of bills that are being accumulated.

I thank you all for your thoughts and prayers and any assistance you may give us. As a parent I am sure all parents and non-parents out there understand our pain in this.

We will fight this with all we have.

Bank details for donations – please message or email me for bank details for security reasons.
