Welcome! Thank you for taking the time to visit my Online Fundraising Page!
For those of you that don't know me, my name is Rebecca Barretto and I have been an active volunteer and fundraiser for various organizations including ShareLife, World Vision and the Canadian Red Cross. My latest undertaking is with the Global Volunteer Network and Faith Victory Association. On September 29th 2013, I will be traveling to Rwanda to volunteer my time at various children's orphanages, including PEFA Mpore Orphanage and Gisimba Orphanage. My duties will include mentoring and playing with the children, tutoring and helping with homework, working in the laundry, mending clothing, cooking meals, and childcare duties such as feeding and bathing.
- Approximately 150 000 people are living with AIDS in Rwanda, with 78 000 of those women, and 19 000 children under the age of14
- Approximately 220 000 children in Rwanda are ophaned due to AIDS
- The 1994 genocide left the people of Rwanda severely impoverished and about 60% of the population is living below the poverty line!
Global Volunteer Network is a non-profit organization. However, they have program fees for volunteers such as myself to cover things including In-country Coordination and Support, Accommodation and Food, Volunteer Resources (program guides, video aids, etc) and Operation Costs (website marketing, insurance, etc).
These fees, along with the cost of my plane ticket, visa and necessary vaccinations, have placed my spendings well over $2500 CDN. I am hoping to raise beyond this amount as the orphanages are in need of many items such as toothbrushes, toothpaste, diapers, towels, bed linens, clothing and shoes.
In order to optimize packing space and stimulate the economy in Rwanda, I will be traveling with the money raised and purchasing these items in Rwanda for the children.
Anything you can spare WILL make a difference! Look forward to sharing my stories with all of you upon my return Murakoze ("Thank You" in Kinyarwanda) for your Donation & Support!
