Read to Rise is an initiative which aims to encourage reading and to make high quality books available to young learners. As the name indicates, we firmly believe that we have to read in order to rise in our personal development and contribution to society. In 2013, we placed a high quality book in the hands of 2,000 children (8-9 years old) in Mitchells Plain (South Africa). Our goal for 2014, is to place a book in the hand of every Grade 2 learner, as well as place a Mini-Library in every Grade 2 class in Mitchells Plain. But, we will not just drop these books off at schools, rather we will send qualified adult volunteers to schools to read with learners and to have a group discussion about the book – we have found that this approach helps children immensely. Each classroom Mini-Library is made up of a variety of 45 new, government-approved, English/Afrikaans/Xhosa books.
There are 46 primary schools ion Mitchells Plain - i.e. 200 Grade 2 classes and 8000 Grade 2 learners.
For many children, this will be the very first books that they will own.
Children are meant to be reading 40 books a year, in Mitchells Plain the children read 2 books on average per year. Let's help these children read to rise!
