After 3 years of heavy use, the Maria Hernandez Park dog run is running low on gravel. The black underlay is exposed in some places and concrete slabs are surfacing in other places. We are inviting the community to donate toward the cost of replenishing this gravel. The gravel will be delivered midday on September 28. We will be using a conveyor belt to raise the gravel over the fences, then using shovels, steel rakes and wheelbarrows to spread the gravel throughout the park.

-----------------------------

Q: What kind of gravel are you using to fill the park, and why?

A: We are using the same fill that already exists in the park. This is called "Plymouth stone screening."

While there are advantages to other kinds of fill for city dog runs, this fill is relatively inexpensive. Fill made of larger pieces, like pea gravel, can harbor fleas and other insects, while dirt and bark fill can create awesome mud pits. The Plymouth stone screening will also match the previous fill, where other kinds would be incongruous. In addition, the Parks Department is much more amenable to going with the material they have already approved for this use.

-----------------------------

Q: How much gravel are we talking about here?

A: We consulted with the suppliers and determined that 60 tons of gravel should be enough.

-----------------------------

Q: Can I get a breakdown of the total cost to re-gravel the park?

A: The stone screening costs $29 / ton, or $1740 for the gravel. Delivery costs about $65 / yard. At 1.3 tons per yard, this is a total delivery cost of about $3000. This means around $4750 for the gravel.

The remaining $750 will be used to rent a conveyor belt to move gravel over the fence (~$200), purchase additional tools as needed, and provide volunteers at the re-gravel event with snacks and water.

We will be refining our fundraising total as the event approaches. Any unspent donations will be used to install a keyed-entry bulletin board, with key held by the Parks Department, to post announcements of lost pets, for example. Beyond that, unspent donations will be returned in the reverse order they are received.

-----------------------------

Q: Beside donating, how can I help?

A: Great question! We need help spreading the gravel on Monday, September 28, starting at noon. If you want to volunteer to help, please e-mail us here: [email protected]. If you have shovels, steel rakes, a wheelbarrow, buckets, and/or work gloves, and would like to bring them along, let us know!

-----------------------------

Q: Does the city know you plan to do this?

A: We resisted the lure of guerrilla graveling, and worked with the Parks Department to obtain a special event permit and vehicle permits for this re-graveling.

-----------------------------

Q: How much of the money we donate is going to your business?

A: In fact, we are donating $1000 seed money to this project, and administering the fundraiser on our own initiative at our own cost. We are also providing an incentive to donate - a free full day of daycare, or a free individual walk with our in-house trainer, for anyone who donates $200 or more.

The funding website takes 4% of any online donation; however, you can avoid this surcharge by visiting us at 1581 Dekalb Avenue and donating directly to our Official Funding Jar. Brooklyn Bow Wow benefits every day from the existence of the dog run and the wonderful community that uses it. We are blessed to be celebrating the first anniversary of our daycare and we hope this small contribution expresses our thankfulness to all of our customers and friends for their support. If you are interested in learning more about our service, please call, e-mail or stop by any time, or check out our website at www.brooklynbowwow.com.

Q: I have another important question you didn't address!

A: Ask it by e-mailing [email protected] and we'll add it to this page!
