Raise a hip for a brother. Crazy name for a fund raising campaign I agree. But raising money for someone, someone you love, for something so small, yet something so great, something that many of us take for granted is just that, crazy!

Meet Duane my my brother-in-law. A family man with a hip that is no longer able to support this strong and proud man.

After experiencing some pain Duane had some tests and scans done and was given the news that he needed a complete hip replacement.

Some biology which explains what's happening: The hip joint is the ball and socket joint that connects the thigh bone to the pelvic bone. When the joint is diseased or damaged the protective cartilage cushion can wear away, allowing the bone of the head of the thigh bone to rub directly against the pelvic bone leading to pain, stiffness, limping and muscle weakness.

Duane is currently on crutches as he battles to walk un-aided. As the cartilage cushion has worn away his one leg is now shorter than the other which means that his 'good' leg is also under pressure to compensate for the way he now walks. He is just about in constant pain and takes a handful of pain tablets daily which does not really relieve the pain.

To add to the burden Duane is not on a medical aid due to financial constraints. This means that government care is what he has to rely on and the waiting period for this type of surgery is sometimes over a year. His doctor has indicated that if he does not have the surgery soon he could land up in a wheelchair. Which is why you are reading this post and why I am asking for your help. Waiting a year is not an option.

Duane lives in Amanzimtoti, Natal with his wife Georgette, their 2 sons Clayton (17) and Justin (12) as well as his mother-in-law 'Sita'. The family relocated to Amanzimtoti from Johannesburg so that Duane could be closer to his older brother Mark, who was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2015.Unfortunately, Mark lost the battle to Cancer in August 2016 which has left a big hole in the heart of his family and many of his friends.

I recently saw Duane in Cape Town for the memorial service of his mother who passed away suddenly on 1 October 2018. She was in a lot of pain in her last few days and her passing was a total shock to us all. Seeing Duane straight after this in similar physical pain was heart breaking. Is heart breaking.

Life for Duane though has not stopped for him because of his condition. He still does school runs, shopping and manages his own spray painting business called ‘Scratch Master’.

I have made this page for him in the hope of raising some funds which would contribute to his surgery so that he can once again be the larger than life brother I have come to know and love.

Please share this page and help a brother get a hip.
