Each year Karonga District in Malawi faces natural related hazards such as floods, stormy winds and dry spell. The government of Malawi and other Non-Governmental Organisations are working tirelessly supporting communities through enhancing their resilience to the aforesaid hazards as part of Disaster Risk Management. One of the critical areas in disaster risk management is strengthening of early warning systems by involving communities in the process of establishing the same. Based on my experience, one of the most important element in early warning system is the installation of instruments to monitor hazards. Apparently, I have worked with charity organizations (and also a part time photographer) which have installed rain gauges in various areas in the district with the aim of monitoring hazards for 5 years now, but the instruments are not enough.
The most interesting fact I have learnt is that installing these instruments in schools has more value. Pupils are able to use the gadget for their studies as well as linking the data to climate change. Teachers monitoring these instruments have also proved to be very effective in recording and sharing data and it is my wish identify 10 schools to benefit from this initiative. Schools will be strategically selected and with the assistance of the meteorological department in Malawi, we will install the 6rain gauges in the schools. Teachers will be trained on how to read the information and how to manage the instruments. Communities will also be sensitized on the importance of the instruments. At national level, am hoping that the data generated will be used by the Department of Climate Change and Meteorology Services in Malawi. It is envisaged that the once installed the rain gauges will be added to the national grid.
The money raised will be used for the purchasing of 6 standard rain gauges (about $780), installation (about $204) procurement of 6 footballs specifically for pupils where the rain gauges will be installed (about $150). In all these processes, I will be documenting and produce case studies on how the course will benefit pupils in the identified schools.
