Ιατρικά Έξοδα του Ragnar / Ragnar’s medical expenses

Ο Ράγκναρ βρέθηκε στην Κρήτη, περιφερόταν μόνος και φοβισμένος, με εμφανή σημάδια κλονισμένης υγείας και ζει μαζί μας 3 χρόνια. Όταν τον είδαμε, χωρίς δεύτερη σκέψη τον πήραμε και τον πήγαμε σε τοπικό κτηνίατρο, δεν είχε microchip ούτε υπήρχε κάποια αγγελία αναζήτησής του, επομένως έγιναν τα νόμιμα (τοποθέτηση microchip, ετήσιος εμβολιασμός, εμβολιασμός κατά της λύσσας και αποπαρασίτωση) και γυρίσαμε μαζί στην Αθήνα.

Μετά από μια σειρά εξετάσεων διαγνώσθηκε με Καλαζάρ (τίτλος 1/1600), χαμηλός αιματοκρίτης, φύσημα στην καρδιά και δυσπλασία στα πίσω πόδια του. Όλα αυτά συντελούσαν στην καχεκτική εικόνα του. Ξεκινήσαμε τη θεραπεία για το καλαζάρ με milteforan και «hepatiale forte» για προστασία του συκωτιού καθώς το milteforan είναι τοξικό για το συκώτι. Κάθε εβδομάδα του κάναμε εξετάσεις για να ελέγχουμε την κατάσταση του συκωτιού και των νεφρών.

Η διαδικασία αυτή κράτησε 1 μήνα που ευτυχώς ήταν πολύ συνεργάσιμος. Τα όργανά του άντεξαν το φάρμακο και καταφέραμε να φέρουμε σε καλό επίπεδο τον τίτλο του καλαζάρ και έπειτα μια συντηρητική αγωγή ανά 6μηνο με leisquard. Ωστόσο παράλληλα είχε ευαισθησία στο γαστρεντερικό του, αλλάξαμε πολλές τροφές πήρε διάφορα συμπληρώματα γαστροπροστασίας, αντιδιαροϊκά και αντιεμετικά, για να καταλήξουμε στη μόνιμη σίτισή του με gastrointenstinal και τη εφ όρου ζωής πρόσληψη χαπιού laprazol 30mg, για γαστροπροστασία. Λίγους μήνες μετά παρουσίασε επιδείνωση το πρόβλημα της καρδιάς του, ξεκίνησε φαρμακευτική αγωγή με vetmendin 10mg.

Στο διάστημα των 3 ετών της κοινής μας ζωής είμαστε σε μια διαρκή προσπάθεια να αντιμετωπίζουμε ότι παρουσιάζεται. Πλέον έχει φτάσει σε βαριά καρδιακή ανεπάρκεια και είμαστε στο στάδιο που αντιμετωπίζουμε το ένα πρόβλημα αλλά προκύπτει κάτι άλλο. Θα έπρεπε να τρώει κλινική τροφή cardiac την οποία όμως δεν ανέχεται το πεπτικό του και καταλήξαμε πάλι στη gastrointenstinal, χορηγούμε μεγάλη δόση διουρητικού καθώς λόγω υπολειτουργίας της καρδιάς συγκεντρώνεται υγρό στην κοιλιά και τους πνεύμονες.

Η μεγάλη δόση όμως διουρητικού απειλεί τα νεφρά, οπότε κάθε 10 μέρες ελέγχουμε τις τιμές των νεφρών. Έτσι καταλήγουμε σε ένα φαύλο κύκλο που αντιμετωπίζουμε κάτι αλλά το φάρμακο αυτό προκαλεί κάτι άλλο.

Τους τελευταίους 6 μήνες ο Ράγκναρ, παίρνει 3 διαφορετικά χάπια που αφορούν την καρδιά ("vetmendin", "cardalis" και "digoxin"), Tadalafil/Sandoz 20mg, Χάπι γαστροπροστασίας (laprazol), συμπλήρωμα διατροφής "Essential the MOBILITY BLEND", συμπλήρωμα διατροφής "Ω3", ενέσεις διουρητικού "lasix" που κάνει 3 φορές τη μέρα, "Urinovet" για την προστασία του ουροποιητικού, "Pronefra", συμπλήρωμα διατροφής για προστασία των νεφρών λόγω μεγάλης δόσης διουρητικών

Όλα αυτά για έναν σκύλο 27 κιλών, μαζί με την τροφή του, καταλήγουν σε τουλάχιστον 700 ευρώ μηνιαίως πάγια έξοδα, χώρια τα πιθανά έκτακτα κάθε φορά που υποτροπιάζει και αναζητούμε τη νέα αιτία.

Παρ’ όλα αυτά, ο Ράγκναρ κάνει μεγάλη προσπάθεια να τα αντιμετωπίζει όλα, έχει όρεξη για αγκαλιές και βόλτες ακόμα και αν δεν αντέχει να περπατάει πολλή ώρα, έχει πέσει η όρεξή του για το συνηθισμένο πλέον φαγητό του αλλά ενθουσιάζεται με κάθε καινούρια γεύση που δυστυχώς μπορούμε για πολύ λίγο να του δίνουμε. Η αγάπη μας γι’ αυτόν και η προσπάθεια που ο ίδιος καταβάλλει όλο αυτό το διάστημα μας δίνει ώθηση να προσπαθούμε να τον ενισχύουμε όσο το δυνατόν περισσότερο ακολουθώντας πιστά τις οδηγίες του Καρδιολόγου και της Παθολόγου του.

Ωστόσο, 3 χρόνια μετά, τα οικονομικά περιθώριά μας έχουν στενέψει σημαντικά και θα χρειαστούμε τη στήριξη όποιου μπορεί ώστε να του προσφέρουμε όσο το δυνατόν περισσότερο χρόνο.

Ragnar was found in Crete a few summers ago, wandering alone and scared, with obvious signs of poor health and he's been living with us for the past 3 years.

Seeing him like that, we didn't think twice about rescuing him. We took him to a local vet, where we confirmed that he was not microchipped and no one was looking for him. We did all that the law requires (microchip, vaccination and deworming) and we returned to Athens with him. After a series of tests, he was diagnosed with Kala-azar (Canine Leishmaniasis, antibody titer 1/1600), low hematocrit, heart murmur and dysplasia in his hind legs. All of this contributed to his very poor condition. We immediately began treating his Kala-azar with "milteforan" and giving "hepatiale forte" to protect the liver, as "milteforan" is toxic to the liver.

We tested him every week for a month to check the condition of liver and kidneys and he proved to be a very cooperative patient! His organs tolerated the drugs and we managed to reduce the numbers of Kala-azar, followed by maintenance with "leisguard" every six months.

However, his gastrointestinal track proved to be highly sensitive, forcing us to try many different foods, various gastroprotection supplements, along with anti-diarrheal and antiemetic drugs. We ended up deciding that for the rest of his life he needs to be fed prescription gastrointestinal food and take "laprazol" 30mg to protect his stomach. A few months later, when his heart condition worsened, we began a new treatment with "vetmendin" 10mg. During these past 3 years of us living together, we constantly try to deal with every single health issue that occurs. He is now been diagnosed with severe heart disease and we're at the point where as we try to treat one problem, another one comes up.

He should have been eating Cardiac prescription food, but it is not well tolerated by his digestive system. We went back to feeding him prescription gastrointestinal food, while we administer large doses of diuretic fluids, as due to his heart condition, liquid keeps being accumulated in his abdomen and lungs. However, the large dose of diuretics is a threat to the kidneys, so we need to check the kidney values every 10 days. We are caught in a vicious cycle, where we fight one disease and the medication causes a new problem. For the past 6 months, Ragnar has been taking 3 different Rx pills for his heart condition ("vetmendin", "cardalis" and "digoxin"), "laprazol" for gastroprotection, and supplements "Essential the Mobility Blend", Omega 3 and Tadalafil/Sandoz 20mg, "lasix" Diuretic shots (one shot X3 daily), "urinovet" for urinary track protection and "pronefra", a dietary supplement to protect the kidneys due to the high dose of diuretics.

All of this for a 27kilo (59lb) dog, including his food, comes to at least 700 euros monthly cost, not counting the occasional emergency vet visits, each time he comes down with something new that we have to figure out how to fight.

Nevertheless, Ragnar puts in a great deal of effort to get through it all. He's got an insatiable love for hugs and walks even when he can't walk too far. Although his appetite for his regular Rx food has decreased, he still has a growing one for every new tasty treat which, unfortunately, he can only enjoy in small amounts.

Our love for him and the endless effort he puts in, gives us the strength we need to keep him going the best we can, following his vets' orders. However, over these past 3 years, our financial resources have shrunk significantly. We will need all the support we can get from anyone who can contribute - even the smallest amount will help! Our main concern is his wellbeing and happiness during the time he has left!
