The American Adventure Service Corp - TAASC
Hi everyone! It was hard to decide between travel and adventure OR education and learning because it is some of both! TAASC is a non-profit service club that works with boys and girls ages 8 to 18. I have learned so much about myself and how to work with others by being a part of this since I was 10 years old. I am 16 now, a junior in high school and I have had the experiences of a lifetime already!
Some of my experiences - -
3 trips to the Sierras and Yosemite - backpacking and climbing
many canoe expeditions
working with the younger kids as a mentor
learning how to be a leader
climbing Snake Dike at Yosemite with 2 other TAASC members (2000 foot climb)
Yearly Appalachian Trail expeditions - completed 94 miles in 1 week!
Ragged Range Expedition
This trip will start on July 10 when we board a plane in Charlotte NC and fly to Whitehorse, Yukon Territory. We will helicopter into basecamp and spend 21 days in the Raggeds. Home August 5, 2014 - just in time for my Senior year in high school! The greatest skill for this trip is expedition behavior - the ability to get along with yourself and others for 4 weeks under sometimes stressful situations. Participants have to have long expedition experience, such as the Sierras trips.
The Funds Will Be Used For - -
- Travel Food
- Expedition Food
- Van Rental
- Nahanni Park fees
- Other expenses that may arise
I am hoping to get a degree in either psychology or psychiatry and be part of a program that works with troubled youth through both mind and body, like Outward Bound. I have had lots of outdoor experience and hope to continue with outdoor programs that encompass all of the skills that I have learned and will continue to learn. Thank you for considering my request - hope you will contribute whatever you can!
