Rachel and Julie Cycle for Zambia

Update posted by Julie Davison On Jun 03, 2017

We've finished!

By Friday morning we had done more kilometres than anticipated, so decided to set ourselves a challenge of more undulating terrain for our last day. We set off from Rachel's home village of Echandens and headed up towards the Jura. Yes, there was a lot of up! Despite plenty of moaning by Julie we made it to Montricher and got to admire the amazing views back over the lake.

In all we managed 50km on our last day, taking our total over the four days to 338 kilometres. We did it!

Day 2 started well with a visit to Freddie in Montreux, followed by crazy drivers on the road to Evian. We considered the boat back to Lausanne but decided to push on (in Julie's terms) and retrace our route (still with crazy drivers) back to Villeneuve. A hard day, but luckily the forecast thunderstorms never appeared.

A slightly less eventful Day 3, joined by Rachel's husband as our pace-maker and map-reader. Made it to Martigny with only a slight detour over a field, narrowly avoiding the motorway sliproad. A headwind for the last 20km just to make it more painful! Looking forward to a shorter but steeper Day 4....

What a day! We arrived in Geneva earlier than expected so decided to push on to cover more ground before tomorrow's storm arrives. All went well until the last 20 kilometres.. we ended up on a dual-carriageway, Julie came over all faint (until she ate cake) and Rach flew over her handlebars! Luckily she's fine, if a little bruised. Good news is that we've done 116 so can take it a bit easier tomorrow...
