My name is Russell Mellor and my partners name is Randy Altiser. In the next year we will both reach the age of 60 and will have been blessed to celebrate being together for forty years. However we have been dealing with serious medical issues over the past five years. Although we have both had good health insurance it has not been enough to keep us from very serious financial issues. Five years ago I suffered a heart attack. Fortunately it only required one stint placement and a five day hospital stay. Even with good insurance,, the medical bills caused us to file bankruptcy to protect our home. Both of us have worked our entire lives and this event wiped out all of our savings, including our IRA’s and savings. Last year in January I had a viral infection and spent ten days in the hospital, while they tried to figure out what was wrong. It attacked my liver, kidneys and a small crack in the L1 vertebrae in my lower back causing some degeneration of the vertebrae and the disc. After two weeks in the hospital I was advised to see a liver specialist as a transplant may be required. After months of testing and multiple Dr visits, and by multiple I mean two to three per week from March until June. I am not in need of a transplant today but it looms in the future. I did lose my job due to this illness but with diligent efforts of Randy I was able to receive disability in November. It is about half my normal income but everything helps. My partner Randy has been able to take care of me since this illness and still have an income. He is a very driven individual and has only had three jobs that have spanned the last forty years. However the stress of being a caregiver and working, he had a heart attack in December of last year. Fortunately his attack only required the placement of one stint and four days in ICU and two more days before he was released. Again, fortunately, we have insurance through the “marketplace” but it again was not enough. I am not complaining,, without the insurance we would not have survived, but at this stage we are struggling financially. Having both dealt with extreme amounts of medication, one of the side effects has been dental. To be considered for a liver transplant I have to be free of any dental issues. Upon seeing the dentist I was advised to have my teeth removed and replaced. Again financially it is not possible for me; I need your help with this and other medical bills. As I reach the age that I thought was meant to be the time in life you could enjoy, I just want to survive,, please help if you can,,,
