As a first-generation American, I watched my family in Venezuela struggle and persist under an authoritarian regime. They often went without basic human necessities and have continually faced economic instability and oppression. Seeing what they have gone through inspired me from a young age to want to help others and give back to less-fortunate communities. It would be very meaningful for me to go on this service trip to Puerto Rico - another culture which has faced many hardships. Three years after Hurricane Maria they are still recovering and many live without electricity or running water. I will specifically be working on community development, and will be assigned a duty station when I arrive. In the future, I hope to become a U.S. Foreign Service Officer, so I believe this trip to Puerto Rico will give me an opportunity to experience what a lifelong career of domestic and international service will be like. The total program cost is $1,300. I will be able to save up $700 but need assistance with the other $600. Any contribution will be meaningful! Thank you for supporting the people of Puerto Rico.
