Since Hurricane Maria, urgent efforts have been ongoing to rebuild Puerto Rico. The importance of environmental sustainability in Puerto Rico has become a focus across the island, including responding and adapting to climate change and the various challenges that come with it. As a volunteer on the Environmental Sustainability project with NetWork Volunteers and IVHQ, I will be spending one week supporting environmental initiatives to help Puerto Rico work through existing challenges and be as prepared as possible for the future.
I am fundraising with the goal of making a cash donation directly to the San Juan community organization that is hosting me, NetWork Volunteers. While there from July 20-27 I will be working in the field on coastline and waterway conservation as well as environmental education within the local community. However, in addition to hands on deck, organizations in Puerto Rico also need cash donations for supplies, food, etc. I am wondering if you are interested in pitching in; I know that a lot of my friends also feel frustrated and hopeless about the inadequate federal response to Hurricane Maria.
If you have been feeling concerned and are able to help out (even as little as $1!), this donation would go directly to the efforts in San Juan. I will send you a postcard to say thanks and to let you know what your donation went toward specifically (it will depend on what community leaders express need for at the time). Thank you so much for considering and/or spreading the word!
