On 28 December 2020 Croatia was hit by an earthquake of magnitude 6.4 M, with an epicentre located roughly 3 km west-southwest of Petrinja, with devastating consequences for many people living in the area. After the earthquake, I was very saddened by the news about the scale of the suffering and the many people who were left homeless in the matter of few minutes. I wanted to focus my grief on action by which I could help some of the destroyed households.
Through my acquaintance, I got in touch with Ivana Tkalčević, who has a small family farm in Trtnik Glinski, a village near Glina. I got in the car and met Ivan in Glina. She drove me to her ruined property, across muddy and bumpy roads. I found myself in the midst of a horribly ruined house in which she had lived until recently, ancillary buildings demolished, a barn and hayloft in very poor condition. Her 70 sheep had to be walked 2 km to a neighbouring village where she could house the animals with a help from a friend. I learned the possibility of a donation account through the City Office for Social Welfare and Persons with Disabilities Zagreb. I gathered all the necessary documentation and asked for and received the necessary approval to launch an action to collect humanitarian aid.
The donation is officially approved and supervised by the competent services. I found a company that makes modular houses, resistant to earthquakes and, with Ivana's approval, found a house that would finally permanently provide Ivana with a warm and safe home. I started this action of collecting humanitarian aid with the aim of raising the necessary funds and buying and delivering Ivana's house to Trtnik Glinski.
In case less money is collected than expected, we will repeat the humanitarian action. If more funds are collected than planned, the remaining amount will be redirected for the development and support of the family farm of Ivana Tkalčević.
