Proposed Expansion Plans of a Charity Medical Clinic in Kuala Lumpur

In 1982, The Temple of Fine Arts Malaysia set up a welfare project, Klinik Derma Sivananda (now known as Klinik Derma SivaSanta), to serve the urban poor community in Kuala Lumpur providing medical care purely on a pay-as-you-wish basis.

The vision for Klinik Derma SivaSanta was inspired by the work of a Hindu Monk, His Holiness Swami Sivananda Saraswati,who served as a doctor in the rural rubber estates in Malaya between 1913 to 1922 prior to his monastic calling when he not only cured patients of ailments but also brought unsurpassed love and attention to the sick and needy.

Over the past 37 years, Klinik Derma SivaSanta has:

• Served over 300,000 patients through its six (6) days-a-week clinics conducted at its centres in Brickfields, Kuala Lumpur (since 1982) and Georgetown, Penang (since 2010); and
• Treated over 15,000 patients via its regular medical camps programme to the rural parts of West Malaysia.

As a next step in pursuit of this noble vision, The Temple of Fine Arts Malaysia plans to expand the existing facility at its centre at 128 Jalan Berhala, Brickfields to also provide facilities to address the non-communicable diseases need amongst the poor, which includes haemodialysis, diagnostic services, outpatient and specialist consulting, rehabilitation care and traditional/complimentary medicine.

The proposed expanded facility will operate as SivaSanta Dialysis and Medical Clinic,and will continue to serve the poor in Malaysia on a pay-as-you wish basis.

Relevant approvals for the construction have been received from the local council and we have to-date collected in cash and pledges a total of RM4 million out of the estimated RM11 million required to construct the facility. Given the charitable nature of the SivaSanta Dialysis and Medical Clinic project, we plan to fund the entire construction via public donations and grants from well-wishers.
