About Us
We are Project Team 21. We are 6 young changemakers aged 16 to 19, who live in Kakuma Refugee Camp in Kenya. We are committed to bringing about positive change in our community, especially for its utmost vulnerable members. We think we are uniquely well placed, as young people who grew up in Kakuma to work closely with our fellow refugees, to understand their needs, and to help lift our neighbors out of poverty and hopelessness. We were lucky enough to recently complete the UWC AMALA changemaker education program which has inspired us to believe that we can make a change, for ourselves, and for our friends and neighbors.

Kakuma Refugee Camp
Kakuma refugee camp view
Kakuma Refugee Camp is run by the UN agency in the desert of Northwestern Kenya. It was founded in 1992 after the arrival of ‘The Lost Boys of Sudan’ who were uprooted by Sudan’s Civil War. Today, the camp is home to over 200,000 people from many of the surrounding countries including South Sudan, Somalia, Ethiopia, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
Life in the camp is far from easy. On top of the harsh conditions of the desert and high temperatures that can reach up to 104 degrees Fahrenheit during the day, the camp has a high poverty rate, and lack of food is a big challenge for many people.

The problem we want to solve
Approximately 68% of the people in Kakuma have no job and no money to secure their basic needs. This is often worse for households led by women which are poorer and more vulnerable. To make it worse, the global pandemic has only made things worse and many people find themselves in a situation where they depend on the kindness of strangers to survive. Our research showed that the main obstacle to securing a job in the camp is lack of adequate skills and opportunities, creating a cycle of poverty. We want to break that circle.
Solution
We will offer 50 at-risk women living in Kakuma a 5 month course in tailoring, giving them skills that are in demand and will help them to secure a long term job, we believe that offering this course will enable them to sustain their family.
Living in an area where only 20% of the population can access employment, it having over 200,000 displaced people, it’s quite tough for them to survive with this pandemic
With your help, we can buy sewing machines, fabric, and other tailoring equipment. We have Two people also from Kakuma who have knowledge and are very much willing to deliver the training. Once the women are trained and are working as tailors, they will be asked by the Project to train more women and this way we can use your donations to change the lives of many women. A
Unfortunately, the requests are many and the resources are few. We call upon your hands for this cause. Help us to make a change in the lives of vulnerable women; we stand stronger together, and that’s why we should help each other. Any donation you can make will be really appreciated, and put to very good use. Training will be offered at no cost to at-risk women who qualify as beneficiaries. Your support is vital if we are to bring this life changing program to fruition. Please, give generously. Thank you
Once you have donated and the project is implemented, your names will forever be written as important contributors to our project, we will forever be grateful for your contribution.
