THE CHALLENGE

I will be leading a group of people kayaking the length of the non tidal Thames 135 miles in 7 days. And it looks like it's going to be bad weather!

WHO IS IT FOR

Baphumalele
Is an orphanage in a township outside of Cape Town. It is one of the larger townships in the area and is pretty rough. Rosie is a lady that is from the township and started taking in children that needed help. She then started asking the government for funding as she took on more. This has now progressed and they now home 106 children and give day care to nearly 400, all of which have no parents and raised by their siblings, most of which are only children themselves. They have grown and are a well established organisation now, but they are still very small on the charity scale and very much grassroots. Run by the people that are in the situation.
Greenpop

Is a greening organisation that started about 2 yrs ago when 3 friends realised that they had made a serious carbon footprint with their business travel. Not happy with just paying more money to the airlines they organised to plant 1000 trees in schools around the area. It became a massive success and got a big following, so now they are educating environmental protection and planting trees in South Africa and Zambia, both of which have suffered from major deforestation. I'm sure you've heard about how much of a problem it is in Zambia? The guys at Greenpop are very motivated team and really believe in what they do.
International Anti Poaching Foundation

This was set up by an Aussie ex soldier that had spent some time in Afghanistan. I never met him myself, but I know a couple of the members of the board that help to develop it and they praise his efforts. Basically, he went to Africa and volunteered with several national parks in Southern Africa and daily saw the butchery of the wildlife including many rhinos, some that had been killed and others that had their horns hacked off and were left to die slowly. He worked alongside rangers that had been wounded and had their friends killed in the battle against poaching so decided that he could use his skills to help them stay alive and keep the animals alive. They have recently started using drones to spot poachers camps in the vast areas and in doing so have successfully arrested, without a gun fight, quite a lot of poachers. In a time where we are losing more than 1 rhino every day, these guys are doing a very good job in attempting to prevent their extinction.
