What is Project HAK?

Project HAK is an international expedition project with the aim of developing youth and promoting self-discovery through overseas service learning. The expedition in December 2019 will be the 11th installment of the 3-week long expedition to Pong Song village in Vientiane Province, Lao PDR.

We believe in contributing towards the well-being of fellow communities elsewhere as well as in developing ourselves to better contribute to the society!

Beyond helping the community, Project HAK also aims to develop our team of youth volunteers as we value the importance of character development among all our participants.

Who are we?

Mission: To spread love and joy to the Laotian community

We are a group of 20 University students hoping to be able to

1. share the joys of service learning with the community

2. Help to better the lives of as many people as possible

What do we do?

This year, Project HAK will be setting off to Pong Song village for:

1. Construction:

We will be continuing our efforts to finish up the construction of the village hall, which is currently 3/4 completed. The need for such a communal space was highlighted by the village chief and this village hall will allow the villagers to hold gathering and events like weddings and new year celebrations.

2. Education:

We aim to develop a sustainable English education environment for the primary school students at Pong Song Primary School. Interactive educational games will be implemented into our English lessons to make learning more interesting and captivating for the young children. We will also be helping the teachers develop their English teaching skills by having co-facilitation sessions to build their confidence in conducting English lessons.

3. Healthcare:

We will be heading down to Nap Hong village, where majority of the marginalized Khmu community resides, to distribute necessities like toothbrush, toothpaste, soap, clothing items and educational materials. We will also be teaching the children proper oral hygiene practices to ensure that they can maintain good healthcare habits.

4. Cultural Exchange:

We also hope to immerse ourselves in the local culture and to learn and understand more about the Laotian people and their livelihood. At the same time, we also want to share with the locals more about Singapore. We will be staying with a Laotian family throughout the expedition and we hope to share and bond with them over some Singaporean dishes that we will prepare.

What do we need?

We are hoping to raise funds to purchase the materials for our project.

US$3250 (SG$4500): Construction materials - cement, bricks and metal wire foundation.

US$350 (SG$500): Teaching materials - like printing of workbooks/ handbooks & writing materials/game items for the interactive teaching games.

Total: US$3800 (SG$5000)
