PROJECT HAK'17

Under National University of Singapore's Rotaract Club

Visit our website: http://projecthaknus.wixsite.com/projecthaknus

We will be going to Laos in December 2017 to continue our efforts in educating children and making a difference to the villagers in Hin Heub District, Lao PDR.

We are an international expedition project under National University of Singapore Rotaract Club and we are a 100% student initiated project that aims to make a difference in neighbouring communities. Project HAK aims to serve the community through construction and education at Pong Song Secondary School. December 2017 would mark the 9th installment of the 3-week long overseas expedition to Hin-Heub village of Vientiane Province, Lao PDR.

OUR PAST EXPERIENCES

Project HAK has been returning to Laos for the past 8 consecutive years to help the community in Pong Song and Naphong Village.

Providing basic English education is our primary objective as it plays a huge role in breaking the poverty cycle. Secondary school students are required to take and pass an English entrance exam in order to qualify for a spot in the National University of Laos. By providing English lessons, we aim to improve their proficiency level so as to equip them with the necessary skills to pursue a tertiary education and to expand their career options in the future.

Aside from education, we are also focused on improving the general infrastructure of the village. Last year, we commenced the building of a Multi Purpose Hall in Pong Song Village - an initiative to provide villagers with a communal area to conduct official meetings and village activities. This year, we will be returning to complete this project that we started.

A new initiative that we are looking into is towards improving the general health and well being of the inner villages.

Due to the lower social class of the Khmu people residing in Naphong Village, they experience a severe lack of access to basic resources such as clothes, hygiene products and clean water.

This year, we aim to alleviate their conditions by distributing basic necessities and healthcare products to these villagers. We will also educate them on the importance of oral hygiene and how to use the products. While doing so, we aim to learn more about their water consumption and requirements as we are in the midst of planning for installation of water filtration systems in the coming year.

HOW CAN YOU MAKE A DIFFERENCE?
