While I was taking child development classes at Mt. San Antonio College I created a special doll known as a persona doll. My doll, Betsy, was created for the class and was aimed toward bringing awareness and acceptance for Type 1 Diabetes. Persona dolls come in all shapes, sizes, shades and with different abilities. My persona doll truly changed my life. It is my hope to create 8-10 dolls within the next year that I will donate to local child development centers and preschools. I believe that the use of persona dolls can truly allow children to understand and appreciate differently abled children as well as children of different ethnic and/or socioeconomic backgrounds. I believe that as young children our minds are so easily molded in to believing stereotypes that are typical with intolerance and just as easily molded to understand that all differences are to be respect and appreciated.

Children ARE our future. If we give them the tools needed in the very early stages of life, they can be ready to face our big, beautiful world with an open mind and heart. While this project doesn't seem like a huge deal, the impact that setting the wheels in motion in terms of appreciating how different and yet how very similar we all are can change the hearts and minds of generations to come.

I am raising money because I can't do this alone! The already-shaded doll body (unstuffed) costs $20, the stuffing is roughly $5-15, clothes can be purchased new or used for between $10-20, hair is anywhere from $10-30 depending on yarn or cornsilk, accessories like non-working insulin pumps (small), glasses, etc. can range from $10-30 or more. However, every single dollar counts.

Every cent will go strictly to the creation of these dolls! Any leftover money will either create an extra doll or be donated to the preschools in my community. Thank you for your donation, support and time!

(About me: My name is Dianna Blake. I am a 33 year old mother/student/wife living in southern California. I am a recent graduate of Mt. San Antonio College where I completed my Associates in Liberal Arts with an emphasis in Language Arts. I am now attending California State University Fullerton majoring in English. I will continue on to receive my M.A. in order to teach college-level English. I volunteer my time at my church, beach clean ups, breast cancer events and wherever I am needed. As a previous child development major I completed 15 units of ECE which have given me a good foundation for understanding the importance of education in even the youngest of us!)
