The Sama-Bajao (SB) are an indigenous people who live in chronic poverty and suffer discrimination from the general populace. They are a nomadic people who live mostly on and derive their livelihood from the sea. Known to live a seafaring lifestyle, the SB regard their bancas as their prime means of transportation and as their main tools for earning a decent living thru fishing. The banca and the seaborne lifestyle are a heritage handed to them by their ancestors. The banog or sail, used to drive the banca through the sea bears significant meaning in their tribe’s history, tradition and identity of the SB.
Project Banog, is a community development project primarily aimed to assist the Sama-Badjau community in Zamboanga City, In our quest to re-integrate the Badjaus in the community we have utilized Responsible Parenthood and Family Planning in promoting family welfare and family health for them to realized that there is another life beyond the sea. While implementing the project the proponents found the need to improve educational facilities such as the existing Day Care Center in order to improve their appreciation on educational system and in order to provide a safe venue for their children to learn, play and grow.
Unfortunately, the only educational institution in the locality is a Day Care Center which is made of makeshift materials which is dilapidated and unsafe for the children. Hence, we wish to rehabilitate the facility with your generosity, we can help alleviate the lives of the Sama Badjaus by rehabilitating their Community Day Care Center. We enjoin you to assist this project with the end in view of empowering the SB so they can live their aspirations, dreams, quest for happy, healthy and desirable family life.
