Project 25

Project 25 was initiated at the University of Pennsylvaniain an effort to implement sustainable projects in rural parts of China. The project aims to alleviate the effects of rural poverty, public health concerns, and access to education. The organization seeks to empower rural communities through community-driven goals, partnerships, and student volunteers.

The 25 in Project 25 refers to the specific initiative focused on the approximately 25-million people in rural China who lack access to clean, drinking water. Such individuals often suffer from gastrointestinal infections, hepatitis, and diarrhea as a result of lack in a fundamental facet of life. To alleviate such concerns, Project 25 will serve as alongside multiple organizations to implement water sanitation project(s) in rural villages of China.

Project 25 actualizes its initiative through the following processes.Financial Responsibility: the initiative stems from fundraising efforts from students in Universities throughout the world. The organization will focus on single project at a time to guarantee financial sustainability of the project in process. The projects in hand will be financially supported with the local partnership and the Project 25 group.

Identification & Government Sanctions: the project is initiated upon identification and government approval of sites that are in need of water sanitation project. The project can only proceed, however, with local approval and support of the community. The approval must be explicit and upon sanction, the community is required to fully comply with the project until completion.

Planning and Implementation: approved project progresses towards the planning phase during which technical expertise, appropriate equipments, and financial resources become allocated. This is done with the local partners to guarantee sustainability.

Community Involvement and Assistance: Project 25 requires community commitment and, or partnerships to ensure that the program becomes a sustainable one. This means that the community is required to demonstrate the ability to financially support the maintenance and repair fee of the water sanitation system after implementation. Moreover, the community leaders are required to fully partake in the planning of the project and it is incumbent that community-members form at least 5% of the labor force and financial responsibility during the implementation.
