Earlier this year I found out I was accepted into a Program through Earth Expeditions a project with the Cincinnati zoo. I was the only undergraduate accepted in this program, which is normally meant for educators and graduate students. I thought the price was significantly lower when I applied, after I was accepted they told me differently. I honestly didn't think I would get in. If I want undergraduate credit I have to pay a hefty sum plus Airfare. I normally don't ask for help from people as I live on my own and support myself including my college expenses. However I really need it.
I will be going to the island or Borneo to study Primates, specifically Orangutan's and then writing several papers with a focus on Primate conservation. Before and after this I will be at the Cincinnati Zoo studying primates noting their irregular behavior due to captivity. This will conclude with an independent study course this fall with I holistic analysis of my data. Taking this course allows me not only to graduate on time, but allows me with a once in a lifetime opportunity to acquire useful field methods and techniques via braving the forests of Malaysia and work with local citizens on methods of conservation.
Since 1950, 50% of all Orangutans have perished. At this current trend they are likely to go extinct in the wild very soon. What you also may not know is of their intelligence and development of culture that may even be superior to Chimpanzee's. I believe with my perseverance, intelligence and willingness to speak up when others will not I can help change this trend, and this is just the beginning.
