BREAST AND CERVICAL CANCER PREVENTION PROGRAM

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY OF BCCPPC PROJECT

Cancer is the second leading cause of death globally, and was responsible for 8.8 million deaths in 2015 Globally, nearly 1 in 6 deaths is due to cancer. Cervical cancer is the second most common cancer in women living in less developed countries. In 2012, 528,000 new cases of cervical cancer were diagnosed, and 266,000 women died of the disease, nearly 90% of them in low and middle income countries (LMICs). In 2019, the incidence of cervical increased to over 311000 deaths annually. WHO estimates that by 2030, the total number of cervical cancer deaths is expected to rise to 443,000 globally, if preventive measures are not taken. The human papilloma virus (HPV) types 16 and 18 cause about 70% of cervical cancer, therefore, primary prevention through vaccination is an effective strategy for prevention. However, the introduction of HPV vaccination in Africa is very limited, and may require several years to impact the burden of cervical cancer in the region. Meanwhile, a high proportion of women in LMICs remain exposed to HPV infection or have persistent infections with one or more of the 14 oncogenic types of HPV and are at risk of developing invasive cervical cancer (ICC). Innovative tools such as HPV DNA testing of self-collected samples and alternative treatment devices that are culturally relevant, portable and user-friendly have the potential to change the paradigm of cervical cancer screening and treatment in Africa. However, due to high cost, and other supply chain and demand challenges these tools are out of reach to most populations in need. This project seeks to address these challenges and decrease the rising death toll from cervical cancer in Cameroon and beyond.

Thus, your donation will go a long way to address this threat to the lives of women. Thus the project will:

*Make available new generation tools that are affordable and user-friendly for cervical cancer screening and treatment to existing screening programs.

*Train and equip personnel of these programs with the new generation. *Organize education and sensitization campaigns to generate demand for these services.

*Work with governments and other resource partners to sustain and scale-up project impact.

*Vaccinate young girls against HPV, with the donation of vaccines

* Carry out Breast cancer prevention with inovative tools.

These interventions will significantly empower existing screening programs to screen more women at risk of cervical cancer, especially those living with HIV and in remote communities and treat the disease at the precancer stage leading to decrease in health spending and mortality due to the disease. To increase demand for cervical cancer prevention services, an innovative website and mobile phone application will be developed. These platforms will enable users to easily identify screening centers and book for services. This project aligns with the global objective preventing deaths fromcervical cancer. It also complements the WHO World Health Assembly, May 2018 agenda and other national health polices such as: the National Health Development Plan (NHDP) of Cameroon 2016-2020. To effectively implement the actions of this project, consortium has been put in place with clearly defined roles and targets. The project has also set up a head office to monitor and evaluate the implementation of all project activities. The board shall coordinate the activities of consortium members, maintain communication and report to the donor, receive and disburse funds and ensure proper monitoring and evaluation of project. To ensure that the project impact is sustained and up-scaled within the implementing country and beyond, the project shall engage governments and other stakeholders like our donors; document and disseminate project impact and lessons; train equipment maintenance technicians; carry out donor search and grant writing. This project will contribute to the reduction of breast and cervical cancer mortality in the implementing countries and beyond with updated reported to donor partners through presentations, cervigrams, statistical/database reporting.

Thank you as we look forward to hearing from you so as to assist us to go a long way to fight against these threats in the lives of women.
