I’ve never been more inspired and devastated at the same time.
This is a fundraiser for my fiance and his family. I love him, and I love my future in-laws. I'm just scared for their lives.
My fiance and his family overcame financial, medical, and emotional struggles but now desperately need your help.
I met them about 6 years ago: a family of four. A hardworking entrepreneur father - Hussein, a caring teacher mother – Sheyda, a smart student son – Saman, and a little girl - Sara. They’ve managed to escape a life of no opportunities in their own country and start a successful business in the Middle East. Full of life and optimism, their future looked stable and promising.
But all came crashing. Trusting his relatives and hoping to help them build a life like his, Hussein agreed to take loans for them. In hindsight, it's obvious that this would never turn out right. Rule number one: never take loans for anyone. But all he wanted to do was help; can we blame him for trusting his own family? The debtors, of course, very quickly stopped paying.
If that was the only issue, perhaps I wouldn’t need to be telling you all this. But Hussein’s business soon came crashing as well. This business was started by him and his cousin, yet it was registered on the cousin. An emerging trend: too much love and trust for your own family. Horrible to say “too much love”. But, unfortunately, this is the truth and there is no sugarcoating. With no warning, the cousin closed the business, left to a different country with the money, and Hussein was left with nothing. 28 years of work – all disappeared in a blink of an eye.
Now the real struggles start. Trying to stay afloat and not have to go back to his country where there are no opportunities, our dad looks for any work he can find. He manages to make some money through buying in bulk and then reselling to retailers at a small mark-up but all the money goes to paying off other people’s loans. No longer being able to pay the rent and pay for his daughter’s school, the mom and daughter are forced to go back to their country. The constant stress of paying loans in time, losing your business, being away from your family, and having a hectic and unstable lifestyle all ends in a range of diseases developing: from high blood pressure and diabetes to heart disease. Not taking medication for diabetes can cause NERVE DAMAGE, KIDNEY DAMAGE, EYESIGHT DAMAGE, AND HEART DISEASE. By now, Saman finished school but can not afford university and only hopes to find money to help feed and get medication for his family. Suddenly his childhood abruptly ends, and never having the college experience, he starts working for over 10 hours a day for pennies. The constant stress, seeing his dad’s health issues, living with 20 people, and an inability to afford a healthy lifestyle leads to multiple health problems: KIDNEY STONES, GASTRITIS, A PROSTATE TUMOR. If treated, the tumor will not cause long-term problems. If not, it can lead to CANCER. Sheyda has also been affected: high blood pressure and thyroid eye disease. Not getting medicine leads to her literally bleeding from her eyes. All the diseases can be managed or cured if you get the medicine: does them not having money mean they deserve to be in constant pain and have their lives threatened?
With corona everything has become worse. Having many health issues, it is too dangerous for the dad to work at the moment. Saman’s salary got cut in half and he is currently making only 200$ a month. It is devastating to see them overcome so many things, find jobs, yet new problems just keep arising. I know them and love them and I am just scared for their lives. I ask you to please help them. There is nowhere else to ask. Nowhere else to go. No other hope. Your money would be spent first and foremost on medication, then on helping with school supplies for the little girl, and on paying off the loans. You could literally not only change their lives, but save their lives. Thank you for reading. Only you can make the difference.
The photos are of this family. But, because people sometimes get harshly judged by their own community just for asking for help, I have changed their names.
