My Name is Thamsanqa Zakwe. I am a medical student supported by NSFAS. I get a R1100 monthly living allowance, I have to send 400 back home for food, the rest is not enough to support me in varsity, mine is a miserable and depressing existence. I only go to campus on exam dates because I have so few clothes and I don't want to be made fun of. I'm unable to enjoy my varsity years like other kids who have all the equipment and proper clothing they need, I won't even begin to mention having fun. On a budget of only R700 a month, I can't afford new clothes, learning equipment, books and the food is barely enough. I always apply for bursaries but I have no luck. I don't know how I will survive Clinicals next year because I can't hide in my room then. There is a lot of pressure from my family for me to quit medical school and find a job because my mother is sickly and my younger siblings need to be fed.
