Pretty When I Cry is a collaborative effort of students from Temasek Polytechnic for our Final Year Project (FYP). Touching on relevant but often disregarded topics in Singapore, the film aims to bring to light and create awareness of these topics.

Our film takes on twists and turns as we create intensity and suspense to this psychological drama. Get ready to feel uneasy as you watch the film and sit by the edge of your seat attempting to predict the plot.

Synopsis:

PRETTY WHEN I CRY is a psychological drama that tells the story of these two sisters; Venus, the prettier and more successful yet unwilling influencer and younger sister to Irene, her social media manager who gains gratification through the fame and popularity garnered by her but is, in turn, forever living in her sister’s shadows. The story follows Irene’s descent into madness as her jealousy and greed for fame and recognition swallows her whole and, as she begins to lose herself, Irene is stuck at a crossroad and has to decide between her desires and dreams or her love for her sister.

Director's message:

As social media becomes a more ubiquitous part of our daily lives, surface materialism is a growing issue amongst the youth of our age. The desire and idea of fame being easily obtainable in this day and age where everything and anyone can get famous pushes the youths to attempt to chase fame at a young age to seek for approval and acceptance from a mass crowd of strangers on the internet. For example, the Backpack Kid Russell Horning an viral problematic teen turned rapper Bhad Bhabie, Danielle Bregoli, or even Qiao Biluo, China’s ‘Pretty Face’ live streamer whose face filter glitches to reveal how she really looked under all that face tuning. However, all we see is the success stories of those who managed to pursue fame. What about those who didn’t make it? Those who can’t make it? Our film focuses on those who can’t make it as well as the sacrifices and the toll it takes on these people physically and mentally while they are on their pursuit of fame, money and recognition to satisfy their greed.

Directors, Sherlyn Lee

Relevance to society:

The making of this film stems from certain taboo topics that are stigmatised despite how real the problem is.

  • Media literacy

With the facade that social media provides, the youth are being misled by glamourised images online which leads them to unrealistic expectations of life.

This then highlights the problem of not being able to differentiate what is real from what is simply portrayed. With arising competitions due to glamourised portrayal, many have gone beyond ordinary efforts and also beyond actual capabilities to increase their potency over social media.

  • The topic of loneliness

Awareness to the state of loneliness that might be plaguing the youth of today which may, and tend to, be overlooked with its detrimental effects brushed aside.

Many youth these days suffer in silence and brush their own feelings of loneliness due to its stigmatisation and society's view of loneliness being an ‘overly dramatised’ matter.

  • Certain mental health issues

Bipolar, Schizophrenia, depression and anxiety are issues that are not unfamiliar and is very common among youth these days but is not spoken enough about or even spoken openly about due to its stigma and is often disregarded in Singapore.

The necessity of bringing these issues into the film is not just to show possibilities of these issues but also the possible effects of these issues if pushed aside and ignored any longer.

Message:

  • Self-acceptance

Self acceptance is becoming rare due to many factors, some mentioned above, and is very prevalent in the youth of today. We would like to highlight the importance of self-acceptance in the film.

With the fact that we are bringing to light taboo and often dismissed topics in our film, we hope to allow the youth of today to understand that they are not facing this alone and that they can finally accept what they have brushed aside to blend into societies views.

Where the funding will be poured into?

The funding will be poured into a diverse number of departments within the original expenditure. It will assist in funding from equipment and art all the way to the actors and talents we hire.

We appreciate every bit of support we get because it shows us that our passion to create awareness of these very real topics won’t go unnoticed and hopefully inspire more stories tackling these issues to come to light.

Aim and Vision:

Our production team aims to bring this film together with us everywhere because of the topics that it touches and we would like the film to travel far to show certain issues that may have been tackled in film but not tackled within the youth.
