A VICIOUS CYCLE OF POVERTY BROKEN BY DIGITAL SKILLS IN AFRICA
A true life story of Benon Katumwa,
My name is Benon, am 3rd generation in the vicious cycle of poverty.
My biological father was the 5th child out of 17 siblings by the time he passed on at age 31 he had 7 wives and 6 children, am the 5th child.
I shared a single room with my biological mother and siblings. My mother, a single mom was unable to find any lasting work. She quickly died of HIV when I was 12 years.
At school I was the poor kid and my mother’s HIV status and early death felt like the first thing on my resume. I knew I carried the curse of HIV and chronic poverty with me, I always felt inadequate.
But I knew there was something that would help and I sought it out with vigor. I wanted so desperately to be free of this burden and finally step into freedom.
I learned so many systems and dug so deeply in my quest to discover myself. I got some break-throughs and years of growth, but something shocking happened when I entered my first computer lesson.
When I acquired digital skills my life opened up, I began to dream for the first time. Computer skills opened up my opportunities to do great things in my community; In 2013 - 2017 when l served as the National Director of an International nonprofit that provides; Health care, Education, Economic empowerment and Spiritual programs to my local community, I advocated for the rights of children at national level and created lasting change in the education sector in my local community.
There are about 59 million children in Africa, who have their dreams made invisible by the vicious cycle of poverty just like me. I believe every child comes into this world with a unique dream and the power to choose how to use his/her gifts. All these dreams combined shape the identity of a nation.
The answer to a positive change in my community is in each child's dream. we have the responsibility to unveil every dreams one at a time. Digital skills opened up my life -they will open up a life of another child in Africa.
