Insults, intimidation, arrests, death threats, and poverty, this is my everyday life as a journalist. My name is Vedran Morin (42) and I live and work in Mali Losinj, specifically in journalism. However, my work is based on questioning and is not supported at many levels. For this reason, I have decided to start a crowdfunding campaign to potentially secure better working conditions.

"Introduction to local (non) affairs

Investigative journalism in a small and limited environment like the island of Losinj has many consequences. The biggest consequence of such an environment is the fact that a networked clientelist group is trying to extinguish me together. There are few loud individuals who will publicly support the investigative spirit and thus show support for everything that has been investigated so far. The published facts of public interest have already been forgotten, and those that need to be uncovered are left to the burden of one person.

Working in such an environment is extremely difficult. Hopes that someone on Losinj will recognize the need for journalism that questions have long since faded. That's why I decided to seek support this way so that I can continue to do what this country desperately needs - questioning, seeking for the answers, and ultimately writing without the influence of politics. Journalism is not just mainstream, but we smaller also complete and enrich it by uncompromisingly pointing out irregularities at the local level.

Brief overview of past work

I started my journalism career in 2012 on the "Politika.hr", first as an external contributor - volunteer, and then, after leaving and on the recommendation of the then editor Ratko Martinovic, as an editor. The support I received at the time was crucial in deciding to stay in this job. To date, I have published numerous columns, and my articles have been carried by almost all relevant media. In addition to several smaller news outlets, I briefly wrote for "Dnevno.hr", before embarking on my first serious project with "Nezavisni.hr". The last three years, the most prominent project was "Glas otoka", but unfortunately it did not last long due to the lack of support. However, it was this platform that was the turning point for me to try my hand at investigative journalism, which, as it turned out, is a difficult and unpopular job, but also something I "found myself in".

I have testified for the Uskok (Croatian Office for the Suppression of Corruption and Organized Crime) because of the information I possess, been arrested for exposing a crime, called for informational interviews, and even sued by those who cheated the state. I have also dealt with attempts to discredit by political parties and their sympathizers, with verbal and physical assaults, and even serious threats. Despite all this, every day I get up with the same goal, to publish information in the public sphere that other local media will not.

Goals

Local, regional, and national authorities do not finance this type of journalism, so we are left to ourselves, possibly with sponsors who are not controlled by ruling structures or crowdfunding campaigns. Therefore, you can support my further work by spreading this campaign on social networks, donating funds for the purchase of equipment and fieldwork costs, for upgrading the web platform, but also exchanging information and valuable tips that you can provide through the Facebook page (I guarantee anonymity). It is not my intention to easily discard the invested ten-year effort, on the contrary, I say that politicians are temporary, and journalists remain to witness changes. And ask questions of public interest.

Thank you to everyone who participates in spreading this campaign and supports local journalism with donations.

Hrvatska verzija
