We have agreed to bear the cost of the post mortem of badger 41 which means we now face a bill of approximately £1340.00
We could not do what we do here in West Somerset without the huge amount of time and effort given freely by all at often considerable personal expense. For those who cannot join us in the field a donation would be so very gratefully received so that we can continue to financially support where needed.
Judging from where she was found, Badger 41 may well have tried to flee back to her sett after being wounded. The fact that the shooters had not recovered her body suggests she may have travelled a considerable distance despite extensive injuries.
The public was assured that this year the shooters had received additional training but barely a few days into the cull, this badger was recovered from the Somerset cull zone with horrific injuries. It appears she had been shot in the abdomen well short of the target area identified in the government’s best practice guidelines for controlled shooting of badgers, which were reissued in August 2014. As the NFU state she wasn’t shot by cull contractors, she is the subject of an on-going police investigation and so we can say little else right now but to thank you for all your support.
Somerset Against the Badger Cull is made up of individuals standing up for badgers, conservation and science.
