In October 2019, I will be completing a 9 week volunteering programme with registered charity Plan My Gap Year in three destinations - Sri Lanka, India and Bali. The funds raised will help go towards travel, accommodation and a placement fee for the 9 week opportunity.
Whilst in Sri Lanka, I will be carrying out renovation work in a number of community facilities in and around Ambalangoda such as schools, government hospitals, children homes and Buddhist temples. These institutions struggle to find the funding and manpower to undertake important development work therefore, the community rely on volunteers to support this.
In India, I will be teaching English to children aged from 3 right up to 16 years old. Indian culture places a major emphasis on education, but unfortunately the education system is still a work in progress. PMGY volunteers help to support slum schools located around Faridabad that are highly understaffed.
Lastly, in Bali I will complete the childcare programme with Balinese children aged from as young as 3 months to 8 years. Volunteers will run basic English classes for the children due to begin primary school within the next year or two. For the younger children below 3 volunteers support staff with bath-time, meal times and entertainment whilst their parents remain at work.
In order to raise funds for this amazing opportunity, I have decided to take part in the Bank of Scotland Great Scottish Run Half Marathon on 29th September. This is a challenge I have always wanted to do and even though I'm not giving myself the most time to train (in between a few holidays) I am extremely looking forward to it.
Any donations big or small would make a massive difference to go towards this opportunity of a life time to help and support each country I will be travelling to.
