Almost 50 years of Portuguese as a Heritage Language

The field of Heritage Languages (HL) is an exciting interdisciplinary realm of studies that has made important contributions to more consolidate and comprehensive areas, such as Sociolinguistics and bilingualism. Born in Canada in the 1970s and raised in the USA since the 1990s, it has, most of all, awaken fundamental and enduring educational and social matters – the importance of fostering cultural diversity in a time in which globalization, democratization and international trade govern every aspect of our lives.

Along the sidelines, in a previously dispersed manner, Portuguese as a Heritage Language (PHL) has, under many labels, been developed around the world through the work of various community-based schools, projects and initiatives. Now connected, the burgeoning movement led by Brazilian educators shows signs of a good work on raising awareness about the importance of maintaining the language and culture of Brazil within the communities of immigrants, as well as positive results in terms of community and government support. In addition, this movement has found that there is the need to professionalize and better capacitate its advocates and educators.

The purpose of this panel is to share the development and the difficult and resilient trajectory of almost 50 years of effort in positioning the work of this not so commonly taught language in the Americas, Europe, Asia and Oceania. In addition, we wish to highlight the diversity of the initiatives and the language policies to which they abide with, as well as their shared similarities such as origins, challenges and results.
