My younger son Oleksandr is 2 years old. We are from Ukraine and now live in Ho Chi Minh city, Vietnam where I work.
On May 21st Oleksandr was diagnosed with brain tumor. The tumor is benign - fortunately, but quite big - a size of a chicken egg. It is also deep in the brain, so it's very complicated to deal with.
Oleksandr has to undergo an urgent surgery in 3-6 weeks. Australia, Hong Kong, Singapore and Israel hospitals quotes in range from 60 to 90 thousand dollars. Vietnamese medical insurance is not covering any part of treatment abroad. We need to raise the money at least for the surgery very fast.
Any medical advice, treatment options or doctor contacts would also really help.
As a brief overview of the clinical history, brain tumor disease has been firstly identified in Ho Chi Minh City (Vietnam) by MRI scanning done in May 2019 . The shunt insertion surgery was provided mostly shortly after to treat the hydrocephalus. Alex has been relocated to Istanbul for the sub-total tumor resection in June 2019. Following the histopathology report findings at the time, no further treatment plans as radio/chemotherapy was assigned. The suggested treatment plan was as a 'wait and see' approach followed by 6 months post-operative MRI screening to monitor growth progress. Suddenly, in December 2019, the patient's clinical conditions have been dramatically deteriorated caused by intracranial bleeding and intracerebral hemorrhage. There were 2 surgeries provided in Kyiv children's hospital to clean the shunt blockage and relocate it to another brain side that was free of bleeding. As Alex's conditions were not getting stable enough, he has been relocated by ambulance car to Istanbul for the 2nd subsequent sub-total tumor removal surgery as the tumor showed substantial growth. Surgery was performed in January 2020 followed by 1 month the post-operative recovery plan in ICU and normal ward. This time round, Alex would need a chemotherapy treatment plan, to prevent tumor growth. There will be a long recovery path ahead backed by multiple cycles chemotherapy treatment plans lasting for more than 1 year The invoice issued by the hospital accounts for ~35 000 USD to cover the overall treatment plan. Some amount of down payment should be processed as to now so that to initiate treatment.
Here is to keep you all up to date concerning Alex's brain tumor treatment. The surgery on tumor resection was conducted in Istanbul, Turkey and went quite well. As neurosurgeon Prof. Dr. Nejat Akalan from Medipol University Hospital admitted the tumor resection went as well as it could be under consideration tumor type , its size and location. Quite big part of the tumor has been taken out for further patology and micro biology examination so that to come up with further treatment plan. However as there are some tumor remainders are left there, the further treatment plans is definitely unavoidable. Due to eye nerves tumor nature and very near proximity to eyes fibres were no rationales behind full tumor removal at this moment without having considerable complications on visionary capabilities. Thus problem still remains as the only part of tumor was removed , however another part will still potentially lead to recurrence over some period of the time. The only good news are this tumor is benign by genetics. Neurosurgeon advised do not undertake any follow up as radiotherapy or chemotherapy at this moment as immediate post surgery actions due to Alex very young age and considerable side effects they might expose. Instead family was guided to closely monitor tumor"s development conditions by making MRI imaging check in the near future to have more clear view on his further treatment by then . My son Alex was a very strong fighter. He will be able to come through his difficulties, of course . Recovery will be a long pathway but it sounds as the hardest part is behind. We all pray Alex will make the best possible recovery.
By this moment I would like to thank you all for your invaluable contribution and help along the Alex's recovery. You all impressively supported the family and helped to raised the all needful funds to cover complicated surgeries in such limited period of time. Thanks to you my family no longer feel alone and fully optimistic to keep up struggling for Alex's full recovery. What you all have done is incredibly valuable! We will go on having a guidance on further possible treatment plans from surgeons and hospitals around the world seeking for best possible recovery Alex can get
