I have set up this campaign to raise funds to help pay an unexpected and large vet bill that became necessary when Mavre suffered a break to a front leg that required extensive surgery to insert metal pins and plates. The original break occurred because Mavre had already developed hip displacement due to his size which means that most of his weight is put onto his front legs. Without the surgery, Mavre was in great pain and was rendered virtually immobile as he was unable to spread his weight across his other 3 legs. The cost of the surgery and all of the follow-up treatment and medicines will come out to be over €1,000 and is far beyond the ability of his Mum to find at this moment in time. This is someone who has self-funded the care and rehoming of so many dogs and cats over her years in Cyprus and who would normally not ask for help from other people.

To Give you some background into Mavre and his caring Mum please take a little time to read the following. Thank You

Mavre was one of four tiny puppies left by some heartless person near a rubbish bin in Cyprus. Taken from his mother and simply discarded because the 'owner' did not want more puppies!

Sadly, in Cyprus and a number of countries in the world, people look upon black animals with mistrust and they are then the most difficult to find new homes for. luckily for little Mavre and his siblings, they were found by a kind and caring person, taken to a place of safety and despite all the odds were found new homes.

This is where my friend Anja came in. Anja comes originally from Germany and has lived in Cyprus for a number of years. Since arriving here she has been moved by the number of animals, particularly domestic dogs and cats, that need help because they are either abandoned or mistreated and it is a never-ending struggle by many volunteer groups across the Island to bring help to them.

Anja has rescued and looked after a large number of these dogs and cats over the years she has lived in Cyprus, almost always finding the funds to pay for vet treatments and for their food and medicines out of her own and her partner's pockets. Anja and her partner have to work hard for long hours to earn their money but they have always been willing to sacrifice many of their own needs for the sake of the animals they are helping. Most of the time Anja has simply got on with helping these animals with no thought to publicise what she does and she is not the type of person to look for recognition from other people or to look for praise.

One of these rescued dogs is Mavre. From a small puppy abandoned so thoughtlessly he has grown into a large, loving and much-loved member of Anja's extended family. He is now probably the biggest Labrador cross I have ever seen, weighing in at around 45 kilos ! Because of his size, he has recently been suffering with hip dysplasia but with the help of regular Reiki treatment from Anja and the use of herbal and homeopathic treatments this was being managed and any pain or discomfort to Mavre was minimised. Mavre was also being monitored regularly by his vet.

For Mavre and his Mum, Anja, a minor disaster then struck when Mavre started to limp badly on his front right leg and what at first appeared to just be a sprain was then revealed by x-rays to be a broken bone. Due to the location and type of break and because of the amount of weight the Mavre needed to carry on this area, the only option was to use metal plates and pins to repair the lower leg.
