I was put on sick leave so while I was off me and my wife applied for housing benefit to cover the few weeks I would be off since I would only be getting paid the £94 a week sick pay. We were told we would have to apply for universal credit so we did and the money we were relying on (child tax credits) was stopped immediately we weren't told this at the time so this came as a shock we asked what were we meant to do as we have 6 kids and you have stopped our only income they told us they couldn't do anything until our claim had been processed which would take about 8 weeks but would be backdated.

I took out payday loans to get us by as my credit rating isn't the best for a bank loan I was under the impression that since the money would be backdated and I would be back in work I would be able to pay off the payday loans so after a few weeks off going in and out of the jobcentre giving them all the details they wanted they gave us a payment date but 2 days before the payment date they told us we wouldn't be getting anything as we had more than 2 kids and we shouldn't of been accepted for it! You can imagine how angry I was considering the jobcentre interviews I went to to give them the information they asked for you would of thought one of them would of realized we had more than 2 kids. So we had to apply again for child tax credits but we were told this could take up to 6 weeks, at least I was back at work by this time but I get paid monthly so I was at breaking point and my wife suffers from fibromyalgia so this is taking a toll on her. All I wanted was abit of help with the rent for the few weeks I was off sick and all this has happened because people on universal credit haven't been properly trained.

We were forced to use a foodbank and my wife went to cab (citizens advice) and they were even shocked at what had happened but we're extremely helpful in getting the tax credits to immediately resume our payments so that was a godsend but I can't get out of this hole with the payday loans I try to pay them back but then most of our money goes in to paying them I end up retaking out a payday loan to get us by and it's just not possible anymore I'm at my witts end especially with Christmas coming up there's no way I can afford it I just want things to go back to normal where we were just getting by and could afford to take the kids out once in a while.
