This Scarlet macaw boy came to me as a rescue a few days ago, and shocked us all by his condition. He is supposedly 25 years old.
He was taken to the vet immediately for x-rays and blood tests, and shocked us further!
The vet suspects he has PDD. The barium x-ray to confirm was not successful, and they will try again next week.
His liver count is high. This can be due to liver failure, or could be as a result of PDD if he has it.
He has muscle atrophy which could also be due to PDD, or it can be due to his weight loss after not being cared for properly. He is severely underweight!
He has a lot of bacteria in his poop, and also a bacterial crop infection. Dr believes this is secondary to something else, but not sure what yet.
His wing was broken in two places. It grew on skew and is why that wing is hanging.
He has artritis in his hip and legs and his joints are very stiff.
He is home this weekend and will be under strict quarantine from my other birds. The barium x-ray will be done again next week to confirm whether he has PDD or not. If he does have it, our options for him will be limited. He is also getting another liver test that will give us an idea of what exactly is wrong there.
Unfortunately things are not looking too good for him right now. This boy might not make it, but I feel he deserves a chance. He has been failed by humans to the worst agree, and got thrown aside when things got difficult! Getting all the tests done to try and figure out exactly what we are dealing with is unfortunately very expensive, but without them we cannot even begin to try and help me!
I am pleading for assistance to help this boy! He deserves our support and love now, and I pray that it is not too late for him!
