In 2005 my husband was knocked down on the highway, driven over multiple times and dragged about 900 metres from his vehicle. Someone eventually stopped for him and Shaun was airlifted to hospital with the following injuries:

  • Extensive degloving injury to the lumbar area extending through the rectum left a hole in his back ( +- 23 x 30cm)
  • Fractured pelvis
  • Fractured right DI joint
  • Fractured right fibula
  • Multiple lacerations
  • Septic shock
  • Bacterial “MRSA” infection
  • Fracture to both hips
  • Fractured sacro-iliac joints and sacrum
  • Cerebral contusion
  • Fractured right ankle
  • Badly lacerated left ankle
  • Nerves which emerge from the sacrum were irreparably damaged
  • Traction on right femur
  • Ruptured spleen
  • Torn intestines

After surviving 35 operations and Multi-resistant infections, it was thought that Shaun would be confined to a wheelchair for the rest of his life. He proved us wrong and after 5 months of physiotherapy he took his first unaided steps.

Unfortunately, after 14 years of a relatively normal life, Shaun begun experiencing more intense pain than usual and lost feeling in legs. The government run medical facilities in South Africa can only see Shaun in January 2020, and if he is left untreated for that long, Shaun may be left permanently paralysed. Shaun is also unable to work at the moment and the family is struggling.

We require around R20 000.00 in order to cover the initial X-Rays and MRI Scans required from private medical care to decide on the treatment path, but will probably need around R300 000.00 to cover possible hip replacement spinal cord surgeries.

Regardless of his struggles, Shaun has remained to be a dedicated husband and father. He still insists on participating whole-heartedly in our family life no matter the internal pain he feels each and every second of the day. He remains optimistic about what his future holds and we just want to ensure that he receives medical treatment as soon as possible.

Any donations will help us and our family cope during this difficult time.

Update posted by Julie Hide at 06:21 am

Frustrated does not even begin to explain how we feel... we were informed by Dr Khan yesterday that Shaun will be on a 5 year waiting list if he is operated on in a government hospital. It makes me more determined to get Shaun medical treatment privately. How on earth. . . . .

Update posted by Julie Hide at 08:33 am

After a really long week last week, I realised that I had not updated anyone on our doctors appointment. We were lucky enough to see Dr Khan last week. After a long day with 3 kids with us, we were able to get a start to a plan forward. X-rays. . . . .

A step forward

Update posted by Julie Hide at 06:36 am

Yesterday we were lucky enough to have funds donated privately in order for Shaun to see a specialist privately. We were hoping to see his original orthopaedic surgeon however after having a long telephonic discussion with him, he felt it was best to first see a spinal specialist before addressing. . . . .

14 Years... just a little insight into this journey

Update posted by Julie Hide at 06:24 am

Between yesterday and today, it marks 14 years since Shaun’s life changed forever. It marks 14 years since our lives crossed paths and we started this journey together. I say together because it really was the day that our lives were pushed together in the strangest of ways. Up until. . . . .
