Hello All, I am raising funds for my baby Tao Tao (maltipoo) fractured leg and spinal surgery.

Tao Tao is only 8 months old and absolutely love humans and food. He suffered a fractured ankle in his left hind leg on 1st Oct. He could not use that leg completely and was hobbling around with 3 of his legs. We had brought him to do an x-ray and blood test (for anaesthetic purpose to rule out any risk). He had to be warded one day for observation and developed a fever overnight. The x ray found that he had broken his ankle and if surgery is not done, he will not heal from it completely which would limit his leg movement in future. Additionally, they also found a stone in his stomach (which he probably swallowed during one of his walks - he tends to like to put everything in his mouth, unfortunately) which have to be removed by scope as it does not seem to be moving through his digestive system and was just stuck in his stomach. It will cause bowel obstruction if not removed. We proceeded with his surgery (4th Oct) and scope and it went smoothly. He was kep overnight once more for observation before he was discharged (5th Oct). The estimated recovery time is 8 weeks and we had to bring him in for weekly bandage change. He was recovering well until around the 4 weeks mark in which he suffered a minor infection in his injured leg, which was quickly resolved with the prescription of antibiotics. The cost of this first part of the ordeal, which includes hospitalisation, x ray, blood test, scope, leg surgery, medication, weekly consultations and bandage change etc has costed us almost $12,000. Honestly, Taotao was doing so well just one month post surgery and we were looking forward for him to fully recover and bring him out for his walks again.

However on 8th Nov, we noticed that he was sitting in a very awkward position with his neck hunched out and he was unable to really move his back legs. He was also drooling excessively. Our plan was to observe him overnight and bring him to the vet the next day. We heard him call out to us in the middle of the night and his condition had deteriorated significantly. He was basically only able to wiggle around on the floor like a worm. It absolutely broke our heart. We rushed him to the emergency vet, in which they had to do another x-ray. It was through the x-ray that they found out that he has a fractured spine which is causing a partial paralysis in the lower half of his body (fortunately he could still feel sensations in his hind legs). I have attached pictures of the x-ray which shows the fractured spine and also the implant that is in his left hind leg from his previous surgery. We had to proceed with a CT scan for the doctor to deduce how bad the fracture on his spine was as the x-ray was not able to provide more information on it. He is still hospitalised there till date (10 Nov) and is scheduled for his spinal surgery later on in the afternoon to stabilise his spine (he runs a high risk of full paralysis if not operated on and fixed asap) and will have to be hospitalised for several more days after for observation. Recovery will be slow (8 weeks) and long but we are hopeful. Currently, he is also unable to urinate on his own due to the partial paralysis of his lower body and he had to have a urine catheter inserted. The cost has been adding up very quickly. The estimates given by the doctor is a hefty sum and we are really at a loss as it is causing a huge financial strain on us. The emergency consult and x-ray costed us $1200, CT scan $5000, urine catheter $400 and the spinal surgery estimated to be $9000, on top of the daily overnight hospitalisation which cost around $600 per night plus medication and follow ups required which have not been accounted for. The total bills for both leg and spinal have added up and amounting to be approximately $32,000.

We feel absolutely heavy in our hearts that our poor boy who is just a little puppy has to undergo two major operations in just a short span of 1.5 months. We do want to provide the absolute best we can for our baby to pull through this tough time and are hopeful that he will make a full recovery and explore the world again. We would really appreciate and be very grateful if you can find it in your heart to consider donating to tide us through this difficult time. Should there be any balance funds after the finalised vet bill, we will donate it to other animals that requires aid as well. If you are unable to, I certainly do understand and appreciate you anyway for just keeping Tao Tao in your prayers that he will have a smooth recovery. A small action like reposting and sharing my campaign will go a long way too.

Thank you once again for your help.

With Love,

Tao Tao and his parents

(I have uploaded the x-rays highlighting his injuries, vet bills as well as a paynow QR code in the images if that is easier. Sorry that the bills are all over the place as I am unable to sort them in sequence)

Update posted by Madeline Wong at 06:39 am

Tao Tao was discharged on 16/11 from his infection episode and has been recuperating at home. He had a follow up on 19/11 in which he had his urine catheter removed as he has some mobility in his legs already. We are currently still awaiting the results from the culture

12/11 - Tao Tao is discharged and brought home. He is still not able to pee or stand on his own so he is still connected to the urine catheter. His surgery site is still very swollen as well which we have to ice pack twice a day to bring. . . . .

Surgery Update

Update posted by Madeline Wong at 01:28 am

Tao Tao’s surgery went smoothly. Doctor mentions that his vital signs are good and he can still feel sensation in his back legs, which is a small win for now. He had to have his urine catheter changed as there was a blockage due to residual substances from the surgery. . . . .
