This fundraiser is for my aunt, Remedios “Remy” G. Herrera, who is recovering from her Brain Tumor surgery in Philippines.

Hi Everyone, we know that this is a difficult time for all of us but with your generous hearts we all can save Aunty Remy and help her recover. Please spare some time to read her story.

Our Aunty Remy is one of the most amazing human beings that we know. And even though she's single, she raised me and my sister Cris just like her own since we were young. She is very generous to everyone around her and her smile brings a lot of positivity wherever she goes. Unfortunately, due to sudden health issues, she’s been in the ICU since April 24, 2020.

On April 20, she suddenly felt dizzy and her vision started spinning. She can’t move and keeps on vomiting. Initially, we thought it was just Vertigo due to age or extreme heat. After 2 days of resting, her BP suddenly increased and became uncontrollable, so we decided to bring her to the closest primary care. But less than half a day that she was there, suddenly she can’t speak anymore and can’t move half of her body, she was transferred to Perpetual Help Hospital Las Pinas to have MRI / CT scans done.

On April 23, she was diagnosed with a brain tumour and bleeding in her brain that requires her to undergo immediate craniectomy, it is a surgery done to remove a part of your skull in order to relieve pressure in that area when your brain swells. When she was transferred to Perpetual Help, she had a fever and pneumonia which tagged her as a PUI (Person under investigation ) for COVID-19. Since she needs an operation asap, we had a hard time looking for an Anesthesiologist that would be willing to have a PUI patient. It was urgent, PGH was full and other hospitals as well. The only hospital that would accept us at that moment is the Asian Hospital and Medical Center. We transferred her there and fortunately, her operation was successful. Days after she started to improve and was also found negative with COVID-19. There were a lot of good days as we hear her GCS continuously improved but 1 day she became unconscious and won’t wake up.

On May 2, another bleeding was found in her right cerebellum which required another emergency operation, with God’s grace it was again successful. As she was recovering from her second operation, the doctors required her to have a tracheostomy to prevent complications in her lungs. Few days after the minor procedure, a bacteria called ‘acinetobacter’ was found in her trachea. It has been said that these bacteria are dangerous to one’s body so the doctors are managing it.

At the moment, she has a continuous high fever and the doctors are still checking the cause. Yesterday, she underwent a lumbar puncture (spinal tap) where a needle is inserted between her two lumbar bones (vertebrae) to remove a sample of cerebrospinal fluid. The full findings are still pending but initial results show she has partially treated bacterial meningitis. The current remaining balance in the hospital is 4.12 million PHP / 121,985 AUD.

I am hoping to ask for your help or any assistance for my Aunt Remy's current treatment. Any financial support you can give/share will mean a fighting chance for my aunt. We are also doing the best we can to avail of access programs and other financial assistance from various organizations to make sure Aunt Remy’s treatment will not be delayed. Her 2 sisters lost their jobs due to the COVID-19 pandemic, so it's a very challenging time for all of us at the moment.
