Life doesn’t come with a manual; it comes with a mother.

At an early age I already knew we were poor. I've seen firsthand the challenges my parents faced trying to make ends meet. I’ve witnessed the immense effort they’ve put into providing for us but it’s different when you see your mother struggling to help provide while also fulfilling her role as a parent. I’ve seen her resort to various means and take on humble jobs to ensure our needs were met and it was heart-wrenching to see the toll it took on her when she couldn't do so. I insisted to be with her during those moments – helping with odd jobs like washing other people’s laundry, babysitting, scrubbing dishes at a local eatery, selling fruits and more. I saw how strong and determined and loving my mother is. With her around things always seemed to fall into place. So much of who I am is shaped by the lessons I’ve learned and still learning from her. She held my hand through every significant moment in my life, never wavering in her support. And I promised her and myself that I would do everything in my power to give her a better life that she definitely deserves. And I did. I finally started working, slowly but surely turning the tide of our circumstances.

Yet, in His divine wisdom, God teaches us in ways we don’t expect.

Last 2014 my mom was admitted in the hospital for two weeks because of Acute Pyelonephritis causing her kidneys to be scarred. After a couple of years, she was diagnosed with early stage of Chronic Kidney Disease. Numerous examinations confirmed that aside from her kidneys being slightly smaller than normal, the scarring also led to kidney failure. Her nephrologist advised us that this type of illness is irreversible and does not improve over time. She was given a prescription for numerous costly medications, aiming to slow down the progression of the disease. In those moments, we’ve been humbled as we realized that we’re not in control. We learned to maintain steadfast faith in the face of trials.

My mother’s health continued to decline and she was repeatedly hospitalized, but during the last week of January of this year her condition took a turn for the worse. On January 30th, she was rushed to the hospital again for severe manifestations of her illness. She was very weak and could not walk. An emergency dialysis treatment had to be done. We were advised that she will be needing dialysis treatment twice a week from then on. The cost of her confinement, series of inpatient hemodialysis sessions and a lot of laboratory and diagnostic tests and ultimately the insertion of Tunneled Dialysis Catheter (Permcath) incurred us a substantial hospital expense. It depleted her dependent health insurance coverages which then resulted to a significant out of pocket expense and debt. With no other assistance available to cover hospital expenses such as check-ups, repeat laboratory tests and hemodialysis sessions, we are once again struggling. Struggling to save our mother.

We were advised that her dialysis access is not for long term use. However, due to various medical reasons her doctor did not recommend an AV Fistula access, and as was advised some years back, a kidney transplant is the better treatment of choice compared to a lifetime on dialysis. We actually have been leaning towards kidney transplantation since early last year with me stepping up as my mother's donor. We've started the initial tests. Unfortunately, financial constraints halted our progress, preventing us from completing the many necessary and expensive examinations.

So now I am humbly reaching out to the kindness in your hearts, seeking your assistance in giving our mom another shot at life. Please help us fight this battle and save our family’s beacon of light and be granted another opportunity to fulfill that promise I made to her as a child: a better quality of living .
