A cry for help

I have already lost more than 40% of my vision. Please, help me not to go blind!

My name is Vitor, I am 24 years old and I live in Recife, Pernambuco, Brazil.

A degenerative disease that affects the corneas has taken away from me the pleasure of living life. Now, I do not see beauty in details because I simply cannot see them.

About six years ago keratoconus literally began to make my life a headache accompanied by daily migraines. The lights bother me too much, and trying to divert my eyes is physically and emotionally exhausting, as well as trying to move and position my eyes in a way that helps me see better.

I am depressed

I live a deep sadness today. I cannot study, because reading hurts my eyes and brings me severe migraines and headaches. I want to do many things, but I do not feel that I am able to achieve anything with the poor quality of vision that I live every day.

I do not have enough money to carry out appropriate treatment and this leaves me very devastated, hopeless. I feel useless and finished, with no reason to keep fighting since everything seems so impossible now.

In Brazil, there is a complicated process for obtaining a driver's license, but I faced all the bureaucracy and difficulties to have mine. As I have problems seeing traffic signs, this will be something else that I lose in my life, as well as many opportunities that I am not able to have for myself.

My family cannot help me and I cannot work.

I do not feel like waking up in the morning anymore. My dreams seem more real than the outside world.

The disease

The disease that afflicts me is keratoconus, a clinical picture that affects the structure of the cornea, altering its curvature and, consequently, generating high degrees of astigmatism and myopia. Eye floaters are also part of this set of complications that I face.

I suffer from photophobia and cannot see well at night because there is too little light projecting correctly into my retina, while during the day there is too much light.

I see the images distorted, unsharpened, both far and near. I cannot focus anymore and I cannot see an object without seeing shadows all around. I do not identify people’s faces a few feet away.

There is one extreme possibility already considered: corneal transplantation. A risky procedure that can leave me blind or with a poor quality of vision, at best.

I do not want this. Please, help me!

How to help

Before the health of my eyes becomes even more delicate, make a donation.

The money will be for surgical procedures for the sole purpose of improving my quality of life.

You can help me with whatever amount you want and the way that is most comfortable. You can pay directly to a doctor or hospital in the city where I live. Just help me somehow, please.

How resources will be used

The money raised will be directed to payments of surgical procedures, such as intracorneal ring implantation and cross-linking of corneal collagen. And any other expenses involved with the treatments.

I will be available to answer any questions at any time and in any place, under any circumstances.

A doença
