The archaeological research carried out in recent years has shown the persistence of commercial exchanges on the shores of the Adriatic Sea during the period between the fifth and tenth century AD. J.-C. Referring to the systematic studies undertaken in the context of the Venice Lagoon and the Po Delta wetland, this thesis seeks to address the economic relations established within the ionico-Adriatic zone. In this context, it will take into account the new data provided by the archaeological excavations of the important lagoon cities of Salapia and Orikum which, by their location on both sides of the Strait of Otranto, have played a strategic and economic role of first importance in the context of the north-south relations established between the Adriatic Sea and the Ionian Sea.

This study will focus particularly on the richness of the new ceramic complexes of the cities of Salapia and Orikos in order to elaborate a contextualized typology of this material which will be useful to the development of a grid of comparison between the various sites and of specify the extent of their trade. This approach should make it possible to understand the evolution of these agglomerations during the period considered and to highlight the specificities of each in terms of port vocations related to the management and exploitation of certain resources such as salt, fish farming , bitumen, etc. Finally, a comparative analysis of lagoon sites located within the area will be undertaken to integrate the two cases specifically studied in a more general context.
