Greenwhich Primary School, located in the heart of Arusha, Tanzania, is a magical school consisting of 167 children and 12 teachers, founded in 2017. Their key focus is to teach the kids tolerance, patience, creativity and a deep understanding of the English language. The teachers work together to achieve this goal through a collective love of teaching and strong teamwork. That is why us volunteers, Femi, Oliver and Amber, are honoured to collaborate with Greenwhich with the aim of growing the school’s income, thus aiding them towards prosperous self-sustainability. Many of the classrooms only have one book per class, meaning that the pace of the lesson is extremely slow, and the teachers struggle to provide sufficient attention to students on an individual basis, making it easy for children to unnoticeably fall behind in the class. Stationery is in scarce supply and many of the tools used by the children are broken or non-existent. Toys are only acquired through volunteer donations and with around 80 children under 6 years old, many kids are left without. The classrooms are in desperate need of repairs to create a more stimulating educational environment for the children and the school needs to build another classroom to accommodate the quantity of students.
The top priority on our part is to help Greenwhich grow their income through setting up a chicken coop business with the goal of selling eggs and chicks to generate profit. The school will then be able to purchase much needed supplies, make much needed repairs to the classrooms, and have the ability to financially support any children who struggle to pay school fees. Our long-term goal is to teach Greenwhich school business skills so that they can continue to generate an income and grow their business for years to come. It is extremely important to us as volunteers that we create a project that does not simply help in the short term, but provides this school with the knowledge, skills and the start-up cash to enable complete financial self-sustainability in the near future so that they can move away from a reliance on volunteer labour and charitable donations. We are in need of a total of 3000€ which shall be used as the start-up cash needed for buying the first 100 chickens, building the chicken coop and vaccinating the chickens. After this is set up the business will be able to grow over time without any additional donations. The sooner this goal is reached, the sooner we can begin to conduct the process of setting everything up. Please help in any way you can, all donations are highly appreciated and met with enormous gratitude.
