Hi! I'm Tiffany (Tifa for short) from the Philippines. Wanting to take further studies (and being nagged by overbearing parents to do so), I applied for a master's program in Information Science at the University of Tokyo. I was accepted, but I didn't get the scholarship I applied for. The term starts on October 1st this year, but I'll probably have to be in Japan by late September, at most.

Sadly, my parents are hard to please. My father would have been happy to fund if it was an MBA; he keeps insisting that I should get an MBA and that his way is the only way for me to succeed. Thus, he's reluctant about letting me go, as well as funding my studies. Well, no matter, then. I can't rely on him, so I'll have to rely on myself and, perhaps, others.

I don't want to elaborate on the details, but I'm often at odds with the family because they don't believe in pursuing my passion, and they pretty much want me to be a workaholic obsessed with being rich and powerful. Staying here - and not being allowed to move out, at that - will only take its toll on my psychological and emotional well-being; not to mention, it will hold me back, as I can't take much risks (all my dad wants is for me to follow a tried and tested path, remember?).

In contrast, studying abroad will give me a much-needed breather from my family (hopefully improving our relations), allow me to gain independence and self-confidence, broaden my perspective, and enable me to pursue something I'm actually interested in. In short, a lot of my hopes and dreams are at stake here.

I think that the money I've been making at work, as well as some income opportunities I've applied for recently, should be able to fund my studies. Later within the year, I'll also look for scholarships that I might be eligible for. However, I decided to try this out, in case any kind souls might be willing to help pitch in for me. I can't promise you much, other than that I'll keep you updated on my travels, be grateful to you, at least try to meet up with you for some chit-chat if you visit me, and (not sure, but I'll try) get you souvenirs, so no one's forcing you to donate. But I'd really appreciate the gesture!
