Darren Jacobus, a 22 year old Saxophonist was included in the South African Team of SACOPA (South African Championships of Performing Arts) to compete in the World Championships of Performings Arts (WCOPA) in California, Los Angeles USA in June 2019. Darren won the Overall Award for Intrumentalists (18-24) and was also the Male Grand Champion for Instrumentals during the National SACOPA finals which took place in Rustenburg from 29 March to 08 April 2019.
Darren lives in Middelburg, a very small rural town in the Eastern Cape. Opportunities like these very seldom or never come for small town talents. We had to travel long distances to get Darren inlcuded in an opportunity like this. He performed in the regionals and went through to the national competition.
Helping Darren to perfrom at the World Cmahpionships will be a great honour to represent his country, he will be able to access more opportunities for being signed, study bursaries and other performance opportunities. This will mean a lot for this small town talented instrumentalist and he can, in return, motivate other artists from small rural towns to never give up on their dreams and hopefully become a role model for other talented youth.
