Can you imagine losing your entire family in the blink of an eye? On the morning of August 14, 2005, Helios Airways flight 522 crashed into a Greek mountain killing all 121 people on board! Andreas was left an orphan completely alone in this world after the loss of both his parents and two sisters on that fateful and tragic day!
As if the emotional impact of this loss wasn't enough, the financial compensation he received was decimated completely with all the other deposits over €100,000 in the Bank of Cyprus and the former Laiki bank, as part of Cyprus’ unprecedented bailout in March 2013!
Andreas has been avoiding publicity because he didn’t want people to feel sorry for him, but after 11 years he is forced to do the exact opposite in the form of a letter addressed to the president of the Republic, as his previous pleas for help to the government have been ignored. “I just wanted to live as a human being but I am being deprived of this” he wrote.
In the past few years Andreas, has been often left without electricity and water, in complete isolation, and on the verge of a complete breakdown on all fronts.
Now, Andreas has reached a certain age, and in his search for some normalcy and real healing, his desire to start his own family, is his only hope to regain some happiness and find a little solace. Due to his isolation and financial issues, not of his own doing, he is literally struggling to survive in a harsh world and in a state that is seemingly oblivious.
Now that the media has highlighted the plight of this young man, I have every hope that there will be some assistance in the very near future. However, in addition to the state, we, the Cypriot and Global community must step up and help Andreas to start the real process of healing!
I personally don't know Andreas, and have only just found out about his situation a few hours ago! I implore you to put yourself, even for a mere second in the shoes of this young man and find it in your heart to be a real human being who cares! Help me make a difference!
